Dvd Drive Question
« on: August 02, 2007, 04:43:00 PM »

Hey all, my friend has an xbox with a thomson dvd drive that doesn't read any discs at all. Would it be possible to put the dvd drive from my working xbox into his, softmod it with MA and install Ndure 1.1 and then shove in a spare PC DVD drive so that the xbox could read backup copies? X

P.S is it necesary to softmod the xbox before putting in a PC DVDROM drive?

nope. u cannot install a pc dvd drive unless it has a modchip or is TSOP flashed. If its softmodded it will give you an error 11

Hi,

did you mod the pc drives in any way? (Like flashing new firmware.) What did you do with the original dvd power cable? Did you leave it in the xbox dvd drive?

regards.

i've not flashed the pc drive with new firmware, the xbox drive and power cable remain intact. Is there still a chance? x

there are only a select few PC drives which will work with stock (non-modded) xboxes and correctly read xbox game discs (original or otherwise).  I know for sure that the Hitachi/LG GDR-8163B and 8164B drives do.  I might have a spare 8163 drive if you want one, just PM me

You should be fine with a PC DVD drive, and do exactly what you want. Once the xbox is modded, plug in your PC drive with a power splitter, plug in the IDE, but leave the yellow power connected to the old drive. When you put a game into the PC drive, eject and close the XBOX dvd drive with an original game inside (doesn't matter what). Should work.

cheers for the help guys, i've got a matsushita SR-8583-B, manufactured in april 1999 but it still works haha.

I'm guessing it won't work straight off, would i have to flash it with a firmware from xbins?

well there would need to be a hacked firmware for it, which I don't believe there is.  The only drives which have hacked firmwares are ones which are mechanically similar to stock xbox drives.  So that limits you to a small # of drives from Samsung, Philips, and LG.  Other PC drives will work as a cd/dvdrom, but will not be able to read xbox game discs (real or otherwise)

without a hacked firmware, a PC dvdrom will read backups, but you have to jump thru a lot of hoops according to the tutorials on this site (unless they are outdated)

As long as the PC Drive xbox can read backups i'm not too fussed....  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Onto my next question, does this mean that if i do managed to mod the xbox with the faulty drive and use the pc dvd drive as a substitute i'm gonna have to keep the case open?

Yes, if you follow what I said, the original DVD drive needs to be attached. (yellow wires)

which is why a better solution (for most) is a modded PC dvdrom which completely replaces the stock drive  =)
