Symantec Alternatives
« on: December 23, 2007, 05:36:00 PM »

i'm kinda annoyed with symantec. Are there any alternatives out there, which protect against virus spyware malware intrusions and other crap that sucks?

Hopefully something that sits in the background, and does it's thing without me being bothered by it.
No pop-ups, reminders or "are you sure you want to do this?" stuff.

doesn't have to be free, but it has to be good.

also windows defender... what does it do?

I use AVG for anti-virus. It is free, but it still works well.
I also use a-squared for trojans, adware, and spyware. I happen to use the free version, but the pay version is better. The free does not have active guard but the paid version does. I just have to remember to run a scan every so often to make sure I didn't get infected.

Windows Defender is Microsoft's spyware protector. It works ok, but all anti-spyware programs have their glitches.

The greatest tool at preventing problems that I use is Linux & Firefox. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

AVG is great.  I gave in and bought several licences for the pro version which includes firewall and ad/spyware detection.  It's half the price (and twice as good) as anything symantec sells.

I use Avast for my AV and Comodo Firewall PRO for my firewall. They are all free and Comodo has a a line of free programs.

Comodo Firewall as an addition called Defense +. Its extremely annoying. The Defense+ component of Comodo Firewall Pro is a host intrusion prevention system that constantly monitors the activities of all executable files on your PC. With Defense+ activated, the user is warned EVERY time an unknown application executable (.exe, .dll, .sys, .bat etc) attempts to run. The only executables that are allowed to run are the ones you give permission to. I turned mine off. Everything I did it would pop up and when I went to shutdown my computer it would like 5 minutes. Other than that its an excellent program.

Avast: http://avast.com/

Comodo: http://www.comodo.com/
