Getting A Laptop For College
« on: May 29, 2007, 11:27:00 AM »

I've been an ardent PC supporter from the beginning, but it looks like that isn't an option for me anymore. My campus next year is going to be so Mac heavy that I have no choice but to go to Apple. I wont be bringing my desktop, so it looks like I'm going to buy a Macbook. I'm trying to decide between the Macbook and the Macbook Pro.

In my opinion, if it's saving you>$1000 go for the MacBook.

The CPU's are identical "Memron" Core 2 Duo's except for clock speed.  Even there the difference is only 170MHz.  Certainly not worth $1000.  When it comes to performance, this is negligible.  Remember, this is a Dual-Core CPU.

RAM and HDD are identical.

Superdrive, 8 > 6, but I think that's a typo anyway (SD's used to be 6x but are now 8x, I believe).

Screen, 13" may seem a little small, but is the extra 2" worth $1000 when you could (I'm assuming you'll have something like a desk) put up a 19" widescreen LCD for much less with the $15 mini-DVI to VGA/DVI adapter from apple?

256MB GFX vs. Whatever Standard Stuff Apple Throws In - You have your 360 to play games on.  You don't want those nasty things distracting you from your school work do you  laugh.gif

Basically, I boils down to is the following equation correct?

$1000 = 2" + GFX Card + 170MHz

I suppose so. I'm probably going to go with the Macbook regular. Anyone else want to chime in?

I would rather lug a 13" screen laptop around campus. Those 15" screens weigh a bit more and kill batteries a bit quicker too.

If there is no difference in screen resolution go with the 13".

Like Greenday said, there is a bit of a difference, but I don't know how important it will be...

Alright, scratch the argument part, the decision has been made. I will be going with the Macbook regular. The only decision now is when to buy. I heard some rumors that Leopard will make a surprise launch in late June or early July, but I really don't know anything about the Mac scene. Anyone want to comment on the chances of a Leopard release or hardware upgrade from June to July?

Nah, not gonna happen. Apple already set an October 2007 release date, although the actual day isn't definite yet. It was originally going to be in "Spring" 2007, but Apple says it got delayed because they pulled a bunch of devs from Leopard to work on the iPhone. Figures. Screw over everyone else. dry.gif

Hardware upgrade is also very unlikely. Apple put out a "refresh" of the MB around May 15th, so I don't think they'll do another upgrade any time soon. MBP might get an upgrade, but that doesn't matter.
