? About My New Computer And Pci-e
« on: May 25, 2007, 08:30:00 AM »

Hi I'm getting ready to build a new pc but I need 2 PCI-E slots( I use 3 or more monitors on a daily basis).
I'm looking at this board http://www.newegg.co...82E16813131170R

Expansion Slots
PCI Express x16 1 x PCI-E x16 (x 4 link)
1 x PCI-E x16
PCI Express x8 1 x PCI-E x8 (x 8 link)
PCI-X Slots (64-bit 133MHz) 2
PCI Slots 1
Other Slots 1 x SODIMM socket for ASMB3-SOL

What does it mean by x4 link on that one x16 slot.

Some other boards say like 1- x16 slot (x8 electrical)
Is that going to work for me?

Thanks,

I you don't need the best 3D on all 3 monitors you can save some money and just buy a Video Card that can push 2 monitors and a regular PCI video card to push the 3rd monitor.

I do not know what all those numbers mean. sad.gif

I don't have a complete understanding of what those numbers mean, but I know that basically the x4 means that it's not running at the full x16 speed that PCI express device devices normally run at. Your first PCIe video card will run at full 16x speed, but the second one will run at 4x I believe. Don't think you'll really notice the difference, but I'm not really sure on it.

But like throwingks said, if you're not gaming or don't need 3D performance, just get a PCI video card and save some money.

EDIT: And yea, don't buy an open box mobo from newegg, you might find some important parts missing.
