It's an inspiron 5100, has 2.4-GHz Pentium 4 with 512MB of ram from factory. I think we got it in late 2004.....

But just a suggestion look in the sunday ads for the e-coupons or whatever that saved me a shitload of money. Dell usually has a 4 page ad with a shitload of e-coupons that give you free shipping, monitor upgrade, hdd upgrade etc....

Just so you know, if you dont have to pay for Windows, Visual Studio, and MS office, dont.
I got them all for free through my university, just ask your system admin and he can hook you up!

What the hell are people having against Dell? They are probably the best company for laptops i know of. As at one time i used to fix laptops for a living i used to work mainly on dells, they tend to be a very robust unit compaired to most other brands.

I agree aswell, IBM make nice machines, worked with plenty of those, but they do tend to get their faults and spit an error code and never work again, where as if something was to fail on a Dell, it either works and ignores most problems so the machine is still somewhat useable, or it don't run at all due to a major fault.

Just something IBM always did annoy me with, oh also they are a pain for removing passwords on, Dell are difficult but i know ways to get them off without too much trouble.

I personally own many laptops, my best and all time favourite has to be my Dell XPS Gen2, its quite a machine and plays virtually all my games in the highest settings, i really do love this laptop, playing lan on this machine is a great deal of fun, and is also quite practicle for most applications.

The only down side to this laptop is its quite a size, due to its 17" widescreen!

Personally i'd recommend anyone looking for a laptop consider Dells machines, no doubt they make some crappy ones too like every other company, but if your buying a decent spec machine you should get decent quality for your money.

Just my thoughts anyway.

EDIT: Capboy, i know what your saying about the dust build up, but trust me here ive worked with litteraly hundreds of laptops, you tend to find those that are a year or two old usually have a good bit of dust build up, just like any PC really, in particular if you have a dusty area its just something that does happen, anything drawing air through like fans causes dust build ups, nothing i'd hold against Dell thats for sure.

I don't know why people hate Dells, they are great if you don't mind the price you pay for their service.

A lot people don't know this, but Dell has a 29 day return policy. If you buy hardware and decide you do not want it, they will accept it back no questions asked. The laptops themselves are perfectly fine and have only been used a couple of times, but they can no longer sell them as new.

Dell has an Outlet site where you can buy those refurbs. Some businesses would buy like 20 laptops, and then decide they don't have enough ram, etc.. or whatever. Dell HAS to take them back if they return within 29 days. So, when you buy from their outlet, chances are they you are not getting a repaired defect. You are more likely getting a returned item. Those are returned to Dell more frequently than defects (which are just repaired and returned to the owner).

That link is great if you are looking for Dell hardware at low prices. As long as you don't mind something that has been used (but rarely). Just stay away from Displays (because dead pixels are not 'defective' in the market) or items marked as "scratches", only get the "certified refurbished" or "previously ordered new."

Refurbs are usually gone after a couple of hours after being displayed. They will only hold them in your cart for 15 minutes.
