Parents Computer Problem
« on: March 21, 2007, 12:02:00 PM »

my parents computer has been working fine nothing has changed in it since they bought it a year ago. last night my mother was going to play her spider solitaire but when she went to turn it on there was a no signal message on the monitor. so i unplugged the the vga cable and got a no connection msg on the screen and then i plugged it back in got no signal again. then i opened the computer to do a little troubleshooting and this is what i did so far

reseated all the connectors to hdd, dvd drive etc - turned on. no signal
took out graphics card and reseated it - turned on. no signal
took out their gfx card and tried it in my rig to see if it was a bad card - worked fine

also when i turn their computer on it revs up the fans like normal and the harddrive spins and the disks drive lights blip on too and no error beeps.

any help is greatly appreciated to get this thing working

It can be a few things.
Monitor could be failing.
PSU could be failing.
HSF could be failing, meaning the CPU could have failed.
RAM could have failed.

If there is more than 1 RAM stick, take all out but 1. If there is still the same problem, switch the sticks, keep repeating until you find a working stick. Usually all of the sticks don't fail at the same time.
If you have more than 2 and none of them work by themselves then it is not a RAM problem.

If you can eliminate all other possibilities, then that is all that is left.
Right now we are left with MoBo, PSU, and USB peripherals. Am I forgetting anything you have not tested?

Unplug everything from your computer from the inside and out. Leave only PSU, MoBo, RAM, Vid Card, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

No external devices at all other than keyboard/mouse. No harddrives, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, floppy drives. nothing.

We are trying to see if we can get you computer to POST.

I used to work at the Fry's in Tempe. I sold computer systems. All 3, Systems, Accessories, and Diagnostics are all different sections. If I was still there I could have got you a diagnostics for free though.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS (if there is a switch/jumper to do so) on the mobo? Sounds like the ol' OC wayy to far then setup wont boot, but ya never know. My money is on the CMOS, and if thats not it, then the mobo's prolly shot
