The only external devices that I have seen that support that many harddrives, run them all in RAID.
Here is a newegg search for subsystem:
http://www.newegg.co........x=0&Go.y=0

There is no way to get any of those drives together for a RAID party.

I'd hold out and wait to see what the flash assisted HDD's from Samsung will be like.

Supposedly their touted to release them during Vista's launch, though I cant find much more news on the subject. Cost, availability, computer target area, nothing. Here's Samsungs website, though all they have is a nifty little flash demo. LINK

Supposedly apps will launch faster, its quieter, uses less energy, and more durable, so I guess its really ideal for the laptop, but I cant find whether this will be designed for the PC too.

I've always liked Startechs enclosures, for individual drives, Buy.com usually has a good deal on them, Startech Link. They also support hot-swapping, though Ive haven't had an enclosure with that feature. Havent used any dual enclosures.

I ran four SCSI hard drives in a single external enclosure many years ago.  Quick and simple.  Sadly, it doesn't look as easy for PATA or SATA.

Your easiest way would be a multi-bay firewire enclosure.

You could also try a SATA enclosure, but you'd also need a SATA multiplier for that to work.

Cooldrives.com has a big selection, 10+ with 4 hard drive support, they are pretty pricey, and mostlly Firewire, but they'll fit 4 hdd's, and I really do think you are going to need 2 seperate enclosures, or pata>sata converters.

Then again, you could aways just get another case that will fit them all inside and save yourself $100+

Edit: Aerocool Masstige, can hold 12 drives, and still have decent ventilation!
