What Are Some Good (preferably Free) Video Tools?
« on: December 08, 2006, 04:55:00 AM »

Virtualdub is a necessary free tool. I use it more than any other program I have. It can demux, remux, edit, resize, and a bazillion more things. It works with all AVIs, not so good with MPEG.

There are also a lot of mods made for virtualdub. If you need one post up and we will help you.

For MPEG I use TMPGEnc. It's shareware. It can also do AVI, but specializes in MPG. I think it is free for AVI to MPG conversion, at least it used to be. I have TMPGEnc Suite and Virtualdub. Along with DVIO (to grab DV from my camcorder) I have no need for any other software.

I have other software, I just don't use it that much anymore.

With those tools and the right codecs you can do pretty much anything.

Sometimes, I also need to add watermarks to some of my videos, I've managed in the past but most of the small tools I've tried aren't worth the download. Any particular app that would allow creating watermarks with a certain degree of flexibility? Heck, for all I know, Virtualdub might have it but I haven't noticed... tongue.gif

This is for the watermark. It will be much clearer than I could be.

So from what I'm understanding, the capabilities of working with (not playing) different formats usually depends on the codecs installed on the system as well? I currently have the K-lite mega codec pack installed. Any particular pack that would be better?
Here is a list of every codec and program I use. Everything is free except TMPGEnc Studio.Everything I listed, I install right away after a fresh install of Windows on my PCs. If I need an obscure codec that my system doesn't work with I install it for that movie only, then uninstall it right after. That is extremely rare.

The 3 websites I get info for videos/audio from are:
http://www.videohelp.com/
http://www.doom9.org/
http://www.afterdawn.com/

I hope any of this helps. biggrin.gif

I use the AutoGK package for encoding, and it comes with VirtualDubMod. I don't know exactly how extensive you want the editing tools, but you might want to look that.
