2. same as above
3. no. Use the cd.

seriously, this game is crap. I love FF games but this one i must say, just plain sucks.  Only possibly worse one is FFX-2.

I've only played half of 8, and still think it is better than 9

FFVII and FFVIII were both coded crappy for the PC, nothing you can do, blame squaresoft for doing a half assed job for it.  FFVIII is crap anyhow, so you're not missing much.

You'd have better luck getting a PSX emulator and buying an old copy of Xenogears.

If memory serves me, Eidos was the company that worked on thouse two titles's PC ports not Square.
I don't have a answer to your questions, I know there is a windower for FFXI but I never knew anyone that used 8 on the PC.
A no cd patch requires the same version of the game to be the same as the patch was created on. If there were updates from Eidos the no cd patch may have been made for a bug fix patched version of the game.

While I personaly was not fond of the FF8 myself and think both 9 and Xenogears are better as well, recomending a diffrent game wouldn't help since he/she may enjoy FF8 and is trying to get it to run on thier PC.

I'm pretty sure it was developed by Square and published by Square Electronics Arts.

Ive found both pc ports (yes, by eidos) to be lackluster.  The psx version was more solid, and it was just plain easier to play with a controller rather than the keyboard.  Theres that weird chocobo "tamgotchi" thingy on the ff8 pc port though.

but yeah, i agree, ff8 lacked everything that made FF's a hit.  What bugged me most was the junction system and the drawing of spells....thankfully the went back to traditional styles in ff9.  Characters were also not convincing, and the "romance" was stupid.

ff9 is awesome, and xenogears is amazing if you have the patience to go far enough, so that it actually is amazing.  And yes, there are plenty of ff8 fans out there.  Just personal preferences.  I hate morrowind, and yet there are tons of people who love it.
