Make sure that you didn't accidently try to reauthor the dvd.  If you put in a retail dvd and hit open disc, select the drive, let it scan, it'll come up set to automatic, which is generally fine to run .  Then you can just click 'backup' and run it , and let it burn too and it should be okay.  i'm not sure what you did.

dr divx + dvd decrypter is the best

easy, too , though sometimes, the dr needs to be persuaded to accept some rips, it usually gets the job done

i've ripped many, many dvds with this, including series (using mpeg2cut2 to cut vobs)

only complaint is that it costs 30 bucks, and isnt perfect, but hey, better than anything else (tried gk and it was fucking fubar, and auto gk has no options at all)

(btw, since you have an xbox, why backup to huge mpegs, when you can rip entire movies to only a few gigs and have near perfect quality?)

If you have XBMC then there isn't any reason to backup dvd to dvd.  I would rip to xvid or divx.  The quality is better than a DVD single layer backup at roughly 1/6 the size.  Basically you can store 4 - 7 divx format movies (depending on original size and quality) on one single layer dvd and play it through the xbox via XBMC.

blue, you are correct, but not completly

while a single layer dvd back up can be pretty bad, allot of the time, you can do it without losing quality (only special features)

and the encoded file's size would depend on the length of the movie (as well as chosen settings).

i've seen  90 mins take up and entire 6 gigs on a commercial dvd (no special features)

while i have seen a 3 hour movie take up 5 gigs

DVD Decrypter is the best program for decrypting to your hdd.  The best compressor (compressing VOBs for use on single layer dvd media) is DVD2ONE.

Clonedvd is the best all in one program.

If you are ripping to divx the best fire and forget program is Dr. Divx (you will need to decrypt the VOBs to your computer first).  I know that many people do not like Dr. Divx because of the cost.  I like it for it's ability to handle as many files as I can pack into the queue.  That feature alone offsets the cost.

The last version of DVD shrink that I played with was nothing more than a conglomeration of freeware.  As I recall it did include DVDDECRYPTER but the interface was a joke.

I am no XS Filter - 062508 - filtered., but I have been "backing up DVD's for two years using a variety of software, and You are VERY wrong .

to say dvdshink is a "conglomeration of freeware" is not true. You are confusing DVDshrink with something else. It is not a conglomeratio of anything. It is and always has been freweware itself, and its encoder is unique and so good it's author was hired to do the new nero encoder.

No offense but the is completely false.  You are going to get artifacts this way.

Moreover At this point hdd space is $0.45 a gig and good qaulity dvdr's are $0.45 for 4.5g as well.

this means ANY long lengthdvd9 is going to cost you $0.90 in dvd storage WITHOUT compression. If you consider the labor and time of compression and the fact you will see the loss on any decent old tv and it will be glaring on an hdtv, why go with DVX, or for that matter even moderate compression to cram onto a dvd5? about 60% of films stripped of extras and unwanted audio tracks fit onto dvdr uncompressed anyway.

this is especially the case with xbmc when it can read from anywhere on your network. I am flabbergasted at people spending the amount of time and effort with compression, whcih gives a loss when uncompressed is so cheap. moreover when you do get an hdtv you are really going to be sad you compressed to save  $0.45 for that second dvd. The only place I use compression is for the xbmc in my car, which is a pain to network, lol ) and 60  films at 3 gigs plus 10 games fit ont he 200 gig xbox I put under the passenger seat last week.
