Raid 0
« on: July 04, 2004, 01:47:00 PM »

QUOTE (XLNC @ Jul 4 2004, 04:00 PM)
If I want to use Raid 0 configuration, do both harddrives have to be the same size, also does it matter if they are different brands but the same size.

Is it possible to partition a SATA drive in to or more partitions.

as far as i know, they must be the same size in order for RAID arrays to worl properly

I don't see why RAID 0 would need same size drives, though might depend on the software you use to make the RAID.

because a raid 0 splits the file evenly, so sooner or late it wouldnt work

Not any RAID 0 I've ever worked on.  It simply makes multiple drives look like one.  Doesn't do anything with the files.

edit: well nothing that would cause a problem if one drive is larger than the other.  With a RAID 1 the drives need to be the same.  And even with the RAID 1's I've done if you setup a raid 1 with say a 4GB drive and an 8GB drive it would still work you'd just be wasting 4GB of space on the 8GB drive.  Though honestly I don't have much experience with RAID on desktop computers, I'm used to RAID like on Data General Clariion arrays and EMC arrays, Hitachi, etc. all large fully redundant enterprise class types.

It shouldn't be a problem if the drives are different sizes, RAID 1 (data mirroring), obviously, is a different story.

EDIT: Yes, it is possible to partition an SATA drive, pretty much as much as you like - as long as you don't mind reformatting it.

You could actually run into problems with different sized hard drives in a RAID-0 array.

i've always understood it that for raid 0 you need to have not only the same size drives, but the exact same models with the same read/write times. Thats how both my raid 0 arrays are set up though... one of two identicle sata raptors and one of two identicle ide drives.

yes it does though, a RAID 0 combines to drives, into one big drive, but effectively, that makes it so lets say you copy a game to the "1 big hard drive" (ie, the 2 hard drives combined in a raid 0 array), if the game is 2 gigs big, 1 gig of files will be put on one drive, and the other gig on the other drive

thats the whole purpose of RAID 0

yes, they say they should be exactly the same, thats why i got (2) 36 gig raptors, cant wait to set em up

same here... but if i were you i'd get the wd secure connect sata cables, made just for raptors, and some people have been saying they increase the thuroughput of their raid0 setup. Plus raptors seem to purpsoly have weak ass sata plugs so you have to buy their 17 dollar cable.... bastards.

I'm not disagreeing with you.  But if that second drive is larger, it won't cause problems.  That space will get wasted just like if you were doing a raid 1.

you cant really get better cables for SATA, its just that WD makes special cables ONLY for the raptors
