« on: April 17, 2007, 09:09:00 AM »

I dont mean to threadjack but Im having a similar problem although my drive reads all original DVD format discs, backup games and original games fine it will not read my self burned Movies most of these are in AVI format while others are the DVD files burned to disc, the drive recognises the files but when I try to open one I hear HD activity then nothing.

thanks

Edit-

replace the laser, or buy a replacement drive or mod a PC drive im about to mod an LG 8160B for my Xbox altho this drive cant read DVD+R/RW only -R so im looking for hacked firmware.

replace with a modified PC drive LG 8163, problem solved.  It will read all media types without issue.  I have a few of these if you're interested, both stock and pre-modified

yeah, very likely your laser is going out, or your laser is dirty, before buying a new drive take apart your dvd drive, take a cotton swab, put a little rubbing alcohol on it and wipe off the lens gently, if that doesn't fix your problem get a new drive.

Thanks everyone for all your help & suggestions  biggrin.gif

I'm going to try cleaning the laser first of all. Then I'll look into the LG drive. Being able to play any media sounds good, though I'm not sure about flashing bios & stuff  ph34r.gif

Thanks again all

for both the LG 8163 and 8164, you not only need to flash the bios, but you need to add the physical connector that the xbox needs.  It's easy soldering for someone who is experienced.  Sounds like you might want to buy one premodded though

Messing with bios does worry me though..

that's the easiest part, simple as flashing the bios on your PC really
