Also, stating that IE works "seamlessly with the web" is not true.  In fact, it does not confirm to many W3C standards such as CSS, PNG.  IE doesn't fit the web, most web developers are forced to make the web fit IE.

What are you talking about?  IE is the only browser I've used with CSS support, without a ton of errors.  I agree MyIE2 is sort of nifty, but I don't like tabbed browsing, and can't justify the resource abuse.

You really need to get your facts straight.  IE is one of the worst conforming browsers to the standard and also a helluva lot heavier on system than something like Opera.  Don't take our word for it though (since clearly you aren't) go search the web and read.

Funny, IE has no splashscreen, it doesn't need to load into memory first before allowing multiple instances, it doesn't require the user to spend hours setting up plugins.

IE is the best, and it always will be.

But with the ease comes a price, the activeX system has been exploited quite often. While activeX can be disabled by a smart user, it's on there on by default.

Personaly I enjoy using both Mozilla/Firefox and IE, both have thier finer points and thier shortcomings.

edit: grammar and spelling

how do i disable the activex system i can try that?

I know there is disagreament about the best browser and i dont know enough to get involved but i need IE for my firewall. If i want to check the security of it I have to perform a scan online but this uses IE.  Also its a lot easier to run windows update.

I had already removed IE (from add/remove list and then a search and deleted evertyhing) and tried to reinstall from sp1 for IE but it wont let me saying a newer version has been detected??

This can be done from Control Panel->Internet Options->Security->With Internet selected Custom level and in the new box and disable Download Signed ActiveX controls. (This will disable the ability to install new activeX items that may cause trouble with some web applications. Also it will should not disable any current applications witch may be your issue)

Shields up should run from mozilla or whatever. I'm a bit conserned that the tester your trying to use requires IE.

I'm not going to prolong this argument as you are too narrow minded to see out of the box.

I wouldn't have it any other way, the internet shouldn't be safe for those who aren't computer savvy.  The internet doesn't belong to high school kids on AOL downloading lyrics and porn, it belongs to us.

Personaly I would perfer to see the IE for the consumer line come configured closer to the way IE is configured on the 2k3 server(not quite that parinoid but much closer). Having it come out of the box locked down and allowing advanced users to open it to the degree of safety you feel comfortable with.

This would allow the savvy to do as they like where as block little Jimmy AOL user from installing the "cool looking" comet cursor on his default install of windows. Then again I also belive that the first user in XP should be of user level not an administrator user.

It would do wonders to resolve many simple user errors, I'd perfer not to even think of the amount of machines I've worked on because of ease of instalation of malware/spyware through a web installer.

The 2003 Sever IE setting is a bit harsh, as most users who install 2003 server will probably reduce the level to medium, as they quickly get tired of having to approve every nearly page they wish to visit.

but for less experienced users (ie. the average non technical home user) the increased security would probably help

Nemt sometimes I like reading your posts. I find them amusing and get a good chuckle. Other times I feel you like argueing for the sake of argueing and getting under people's skin. I have a hard time believing that someone who acts as intelligent as you do is just so blatantly wrong on some things. And won't back down. Frankly you perplexed the hell out of me with your response to me asking you why you prefered BSD to Linux. It's as if your opinion on the 2 is not based on their merits as an OS, but more on principal, which is nice in some regards, but not on a computer I use on a daily basis.

IE is not the most effecient browser. There's are several alternatives that are just as good, if not better, than IE. IE is.....ehhh, it's really not worth it. .........
