ok sorry for bumping a semi dead thread, but i have gotten around to doing a few test encodes

Video Source:
mpeg 2(ripped from dvd) opening sequence of an anime
filtered and preproccessed into a temp losless codec(huffyuv)
length is 1 min 56 sec
size is 640x480
framerate is 23.976
audio prencoded to 128 kbps cbr LAME mp3

i set encoding on both codecs using best quality settings(i would post these but im too damn lazy to go and pull them from my jobs file)
versions for the codecs:
xvid RC4
divx 5.1.1

600 kbps run:
time to encode:
xvid - 13 mins
divx - 45 mins

end sizes:
divx - 10.52 MB
xvid - 10.66 MB

quality:
cant tell much here, single screenshots dont show well, and i dont have the webspace to put the entire vid up

in this case, divx is noticeably better quality by a fair margin

800 kbps run:
size:
divx - 13.37 MB
xvid - 13.14 MB

quality:
divx still has better quality, but it is not easily noticeable to tell the difference

in short, if youre working with high bitrates, and you want the job done fast, use xvid, but i would suggest divx for low bitrate vids as well as ones that you can spend a long time on encoding

i was just using both
xvid seems to be a little quicker and good quality using auto Gk to encode it only does 1 pass
where if you encode with divx it does 2 passes?
not to sure what size is best 4 the file been using max 800mb
works good.

dr divx seems a little quick and more reliable than auto gk
so been using that.
nice speed , smaller size , no probs up till now?

I could write an app that just displays "u suk" in an msdos box, and not release the source - and the internet community would go insane saying it's evil proprietary code, and start an open-source "u suk" project.

there is a 2 pass xvid encode, but u have to set it liek that

i belive dr divx defaults to multi pass encoding for divx files, i use VirtualDubMod for all my video editing wink.gif

in general, divx is better quality, especially for low bitrates, but takes a long time to encode
xvid is very close to the same quality at med-high bitrates, and is very fast when encoding, even at slowest settings

Just to let everyone know, I did a little homework and found a "one click" method of encoding Xvids or Divxs, you may or may not of heard of it, it is called AutoGK, which, hince the name, is a Automatic Verison of Gordian Knot.  it can be found here--> http://forum.doom9.o...ighlight=AutoGK

I found this to be very easy with great results for making those Xvids.  But the best feature of AutoGK is the ability to do more than one project at once, in other words, you can set up all of your projects at night and it should be by the next morning.   If you dont like the process of Gordian Knot, then try AutoGK.  you might be suprised at the results.
