Dead Hd? V1.0 Needs Service Error.
« on: April 13, 2007, 12:17:00 PM »

Whats up guys. This is my first post in the Xbox Scene forums. First off let me start with some background. I am a noob when it comes to modding xbox's far from a noob when it comes to computer hardware and software. Ive been watching the Xbox Scene site for almost 3 years now attempting to gain come knowlege before i made my first mod. Unfortunetly my xbox has less patience than me :-). TO THE POINT. I have a version 1.0 xbox dated 11-2001 got it the first christmas they came out. Ive had to replace the DVD drive before due to extenseive use and had to re solder a pin on the power supply pin back to the board where the power cord plugs in but nothing major till about a year ago the HD started ticking, yea the ping of death. It got to where it would only boot every once in 10-20 tries or so then one day stopped booting at all. Now right after the X aprears on the screen it frags and i get an xbox needs service screen with no error codes. Im pretty sure the couse of this is a dead HD. My question is this. A. just becouse the xbox freaks does that mean the HD is 100% dead? i dont hear it ticking when its booting anymore and it is definatly spinning up. B. Does the HD still become unlocked even with the error screen up? What im looking at doing is either getting the HD key or salvaging what i can from the drive. I would buy a mod chip and just slap another HD in it but im married and my wife wont let me have a mod chip (dont get married). Im basicly looking for suggestions here about how i can tell its the HD that is the problem. If the box is in fact screwed beyong resonable repair then I WILL SELL IT FOR PARTS to anyone interested.

I've had a dead hard drive before too. Usually came up as an Error 7. I would nominate that as your most likely problem. If you can get it too boot again softmod it and get your data off it. Then look around the bst forums for a unlocked stock. I believe when its on the error screen you describe its unlocked, but dont quote me on that. Although im not took knowledgeable on sofmoding so I dont know how to swap a HD via that method. I would just get a Duo X2 mod chip if possible. Theyre only like 20 bucks after shipping, usually less. If the wife wont allow it though, check out the tuts on it. I think theres one on the XS main site.

EDIT: Check the power on your pins with a multi meter just to make sure your getting addequate power.

Problem solved! After a few minutes of weighing my options i decided to go all out. I looked up those eeprom reader tutorials on here and constructed me a eeprom reader. dumped the eebrom file to a floppy, booted xboxhdm, unlocked the 8gig from the xbox, started formatting and FAILED right in the middle due to a nasty ticking noise. SO i took an old 80gig drive i had laying around, formatted it, dropped the ndure softmod on it, locked it down with the key from the eeprom, booted it up. BINGO. Version 1.0 november 2001 xbox back up and running after a year of being dead. Thats guys for all of the awsome information on this site, the great tutorials, instructions and guids. Also thanks to all of the tallented programmers out there. My system now runs better than ever and makes one hell of a media center for my living room thanx to xbmc. ROCK ON XBOX SCENE.

For some reason I didnt find that whole process that easy the first time I did it, although this was years ago that I did this.

Man i had alot of typos in my last post. Got a little too excited. To be honest constructing the eeprom reader and formatting the hard drive werent that bad. Granted it took a little computer based common sense to peice togeather some of the tutorials and figure out how to perform what i wanted to do. The thing that took me the longest was getting my stupid desktop to burn a cd. I have never performed a mod on an xbox until this past weekend and over the weekend i hot swapped my 1.6 and installed the ndure softmod along with xbmc and a few other nice apps, i constructed an eeprom reader and managed to format a new hard drive and install it into my 1.0 xbox, i also installed gentoox onto the 1.0. So its been a productive weekend, it took almost 6 hours to get the perfect cd-rw and speed combination to make my 1.0 thompson drive read the linux disk but as far as installing the mods and software, these guys on this site really put some work into that software to make it as easy as possible. I'm so excited now that i can watch movies off of my pc right onto my tv along with online music and many many other media formats and still play xbox games. MS was just holding back the true potential of these little machines.
