Yeah, basically, any 9800 > any 9600

More pipelines - and that can be very significant in some games.

This is a lot like the situation where many GeForceFX cards were significantly slower than several GeForce4 - though higher priced.

and nvidia claims another victim....

benchmarks show that the Geforce FX 5950 which is meant to compete with the 9800 XT only operates on par with the 9800 Pro, but geforce cards still have a serious lackign in way of AA and AF quality and performance

i would just save my money a little longer and wait for the next gen cards to come out and get one of those such as the ATI R420;  or you could wait and purchase a new mobo with PCI-Express and a PCI-Express vid card, which will be way faster than AGP, as AGP will become obsolete (like ISA slots did)

With that strategy, you'd always be waiting for "the next big thing" - because when it comes out, it won't be cheap, so you wait for it to become affordable, then "the next NEXT big thing" will be ready to approach.

Honestly, a 9800 Pro will handle any game likely to run in the next two years without blinking.
