What I use:  

Particle illusion and adobe aftereffects for special effects.  Photoshop for artwork.

Sonic foundry Vegas Video for putting the thing together.

It's a relatively easy way to get a decent video done.

You could try flash animations, and export to video, or use some 3D modeling program (I don't use any of those though)
