Xp Professional Install
« on: March 17, 2004, 06:23:00 PM »

I am using Home now, and want to install Professional so I can use IIS. I had to do a reformat on this computer, so Home is back on. I used to have Professional.

Ok, the problem is..

I put in my XP CD, and have it upgrade Home to Professional. It installs some while Windows is running, and then it has to reboot into DOS to install the rest. After my computer reboots, it shows the "Starting Windows Setup" screen, but never gets pass it. I left it running for an hour, but nothing happened. I tried using different DVD and CDROM drives, but no luck.

Any idea why it's "freezing" at this screen? I can hear that the CD isn't spinning or loading anything.

While doing XP installs before, restarting the process from the begining it would just lock at the same spot. I was able to get by it by rebooting and ,rather than restarting the whole prossess, allowing it to automaticly resume.
But thouse were clean installs,  in your case it most likely is rather than resuming booting into windows.

Are you able to boot into safe mode?  It sounds like it could be a boot loader problem.  What is the boot order set in your BIOS?

Well, I think it's the disc. I tried installing some components in Windows, and it couldn't load a file off the disc. I will try to get another disc from someone else.

have you tried a disk to disk copy of the XP cd and installing from that?

or copy the installation files to the HD & run the installation off the HD.
