1.6 Version Xbox Doesn't Turn On
« on: April 05, 2007, 09:24:00 PM »

this is really pissing me off because the mod was just a softmod and everything was untouched and the xbox was put away where it wouldn't be disturbed. now when i press the power or the eject nothing happens, like it isnt even plugged in. i switched out the face plate and powersupply, but that didn't change anything. what else could it be??? its so strange... Most likely the faulty transistor problem; very common. Check the pinned FAQs.

awesome, thanks guys!

edit: checked the voltage and it read .39 so i know i have to replace the chip. any recommendations on how to remove it? i was thinking of stripping a single wire from an ide cable, wrapping it arround something, then slip it under the legs and pull away from the chip while heating part of the copper wiring with a soldering iron. could i jus take a knife to the legs? im a lil afraid to do this but it seems easy enuf to solder back in place asuming i dont destroy it taking the chip out. im also worried that the transistor i replace it with won't fit right, if this is the case can i wire it in? hopefully i have a 1.6 mobo laying arround..

This is how I'd do it:

Heat up the single leg with the soldering iron, and at the same time, use a very small screwdriver or pick (I picked up a pick set from princess auto) to gently lift the one leg off the motherboard. Repeat once more on the other side. Then, hold the transistor with tweezers and heat up the third leg, and the transistor will pop off.

great news, i got it working!!! Here is what I did incase someone in the same situation needs to install a transistor:

i took some flux and put a lil dab on both sides of the transistor, then took a desoldering braid and pressed it against the sides, then firmly pressed against the braid with my soldering iron for a second then let go, and repeated this proccess about 3 times on both sides till i was satisfied that as much solder that could of been removed was removed. then with a pick, i pressed against the leg on the transistor as i kept the soldering iron on the leg, this was the hard part because its almost impossible to not have the pick slip off the leg and scratch the motherboard (which it did a couple times but not badly). when the transistor was removed i carefully applied solder to each little metal square, making a peak on each one, then i took my transistor and bent the legs so that the right ones were connecting to the right squares (it wasnt a surface mount resistor but the other kind with like 1.5cm leads coming from it. after i installed it i checked to make sure that the right leads were connected to the right places, and good thing i did because the wrong leads were touching the wrong parts of the board! so i carefully undid it then put it back on, after it was firmly installed i plugged in the xbox and checked the voltage. It gave the correct reading so i powered it on and it worked!

If anyone wishes to have me perform this same fix on their xbox you can contact me at [email protected]  the service will cost 30 dollars which I think is very reasonable.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my thread! People like you are what makes this site so great (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
