Lg 8160b Read Problems

I just found out that I have an LG 8160B dvd drive in my PC, its quite an old drive about 5yrs+, Im not using it anymore so I might aswel attempt the mod. When I have it in the PC it reads CD's/RW's fine but it has a problem when it comes to DVD's, My DVD collection is made up of two types of media, one is +R these are verbatim discs and the other are -R these are datarite yellow's. The drive reads the -R fine but not the +R, im wondering if I complete the mod will it still have these problems in the Xbox? Ive googled this problem and other people claim that it is not a physical problem but a firmware one, is there Xbox firmware for the drive?
also will the drive be able to read original xbox discs after? and if not what is the point of doing the whole mod, apart from gaining eject functionality etc.
