Internet Explorer Popups
« on: February 23, 2004, 06:16:00 PM »

okay, I hate IE.  I never use it at all.  I stick with mozilla firebird (or firefox as teh latest is called)  but for some reason, all of a sudden I started getting an insane amount of popups in IE windows.  I know it is some form of adware or spy ware or some thing becuase the popups arnt coming from a website.  I have ran ad-aware and quarantined and deleted everything it brings up but it isnt getting rid of my problem.  it fuckin pisses me off.  If I just leave the computer on for five minutes (no internet windows open, nothing on but the desktop) i get like 10 popups   it is insane!!!!

any other programs I can use that are better than adaware?  or shoudl I do something else?

and I dont want to get a popup blocker because that doesnt actually fix the problem it just covers it up since I am sure it is something on  my computer causeing it.

Try spybot search and destroy as well.  It might catch something adaware missed.

Depending on what site these popups send you to, you might need to do some manual registry hacking.  If you open a browser and go to www.cnn.com and leave it there for 20 minutes, does it eventually go to some other site?  Porn search engine perhaps?

I have been sitting at cnn.com like gajin suggested but it hasnt went to a dirrerent site yet.  It doesnt seem to be actually hijacking my browser.  I just get tons of popups.  most of the popups are actually for popup blocking utilities

I have ran ad-aware and deleted everythign it brings up.

I also ran spyhunter and it borought up sojmething called purityscan which it said installs adware.  There was alos a few cookie files it borught up.

I opened up regedit and deleted purityscan manually (spyhunter trial versiondoesnt delte)  I then deleted teh cookies it brought up.

I am still getting popups like crazy though.  If I run a scan right after deleting the cookies then it doesnt bring anyything up.  If I wait a few minutes and scan again, then it brings up the exact same cookies again.

how can I find what is installing this adware?
ive deleted purityscan from the registry so I dont think that is the problem anymore

Some Adware actually actively disables scanners when it is running.  Scanning from Safemode might help this.

Also, you can try looking at the system processes (right click on taskbar, Task Manager, processes tab), looking for anything suspicious, typing the name into google, and see what comes up.

EDIT: here's that purityscan you were talking about: http://www.spywaregu...show.php?id=618

See if any of those process names are still running.

I had the same problem with xp if they are the same. mine always came in tan or gray boxes cant remember which. But they didnt look like an explorer windows with the blue and red tabs in the upper right hand side where you close out. I found that the problem was that I didnt have my built in XP firewall enabled. If you have the same problem I did, just go into network connections and find your connection go to properties then advanced make sure internet connection firewall in enabled. Atleast that was my problem they went away. I read on MS website that they were comming in from a port. Hope this helps if I can find a link I will post it.

EDIT:
Try these.

1.  make sure the "messenger" windows service is disabled.  control panels->admin tools->services

2.  use adaware, updated constantly

3.  use spybot search&destroy

4.  use javacool spywareblaster (just protects from future spyware installs)

if all else fails, use a popup blocker.

i personally do all of the above, and i use norton internet security pro 2004, and im behind a router, and i use the google toolbar.  i get very few (if any) popups.
