Wifi -> Pc Nic -> Xbox To Provide Internet
« on: April 04, 2007, 10:34:00 PM »

Ok, my friend has a computer thats hooked up to his dads wireless network. He also has an xbox that he wants to network. The problem is that he can't afford to buy a wireless adapter for his xbox. He has an extra network adapter in the computer. So here is my question: Is there a way to share the internet connection with the xbox if I used a crossover cable and hooked up the xbox to the second NIC?

Things to consider:
1. His dad is a paranoid so we have no access to the router settings to adjust IPs or anything like that.
2. Since there is already a wireless router on the network... regular windows internet connection sharing doesnt work because Windows wants to make the IP of the host comptuer: 192.168.0.1 (which can't happen since the router is running on 192.168.2.1 (so all the PCs on the network are running 192.168.2.*)
3. I tried using WinProxy but it tried to reassign the IP of the host computer. Is there any software that doesn't require an IP change?

Does anyone have ideas on how I can get this xbox on the internet without having to connect it directly to the router and without buying a wireless adapter for it?

Thanks!

You can try bridging the two network connections (PC Wifi and PC Ethernet NIC). I don't have XP installed right now, but IIRC, you select both network adapters in the network connections window, and then right click, and select bridge.

The bridge feature sucks in XP. Good luck with that one

True; if that doesn't work out, you can also try using Internet Connecting Sharing in XP to use the PC as a router, but that might be messier to configure.
