My Computer Simply Won't Start
« Reply #30 on: February 20, 2004, 09:53:00 PM »

i had it set to floppy bc i had a boot up floppy disk that was in there.... but i'll try the cd order i suppose,.... either way,... cd was at least 3rd on the boot up list, would it not get to it eventually if the first two options didn't work??  i was under the impression that the computer would try option 1 then move onto option 2 then finally to option 3 (or however many options there are until it finally gets to the HDD where it SHOULD be able to load up from).... correct me if im wrong though....

another thing,... i believe it tried to boot up from the cd bc i heard it spinning, but nothing happened.....

Sounds like a driver issue? Do you have the correct drivers?

Go to my computer, right click-->go to properties-->go to hardware-->go to device manager-->expand the modems section or network adapters. There you should find the name of your modem with a model number.

The modem might have a yellow triangle with an "!" inside of it meaning it needs a driver.

Find the name of the the modem after you find the name search google for
"xxmodem namexx driver"

If you cant find the driver post the name of the moden "model number"

Hope thats helps you out.

All it says in there is "PCI simple communications device"  and i think/thought that was just another name for "modem".... so i took my "modem'' out to see if it said the name on the actual card,... but i cant seem to find any real identifying name on it....it has an intel sticker on one of the chips.... and another thing says supreme on it,... but i figure that doesnt make a damn lick of difference... so i tried typing in the serial number to google but nothing....

s/n  F00  82A75675    H1H

but when i searched through google i did find a forum where numerous ppl had the same problem when switching over to xp... but i still need to find the proper driver now....

wow, thank you,... that LOOKS like exactly what i need,... i have downloaded them both and put them on a floppy disk... only problem now,.....(they seem endless...(the problems)) is my floppy drive doesnt work on that computer,... goddamn why are these things so complicated, they seem to go together so easy, yet NOTHING works...

so onto the floppy drive,... the little light under it is constantly on and it doesnt read anything,... i have checked the fdc cable and it seems to be in properly (i have tried flippin it over and such).... so i dunno wut else it could be....

is it normally this hard to get everything up and running after assemblying the computer? or is just bc its a cheap mobo with cheaper stuff? or is just that im retarded? bc nothing seems to be working....

on the note of nothing working, mine as well mention this while i rant... i reformatted my HDD while putting xp on so i have no programs, and i have this ADOBE training dvd type thing, so i just wanted to watch it,... and it comes with an interactual dvd player,... only problem, when i try to play it  it says that my resolution or color depth may be too high and if i lowered it it might work (not exact words, but it was  something like that)... anyways i tried putting my monitor down to 600x800 and the color at 12bit (i think,... or 16bit,... the lowest one, cant remember right now) and it still doesnt work... hopefully thats just the interactual player and when i get a new one it'll work,... anyways... thank you all again for all of the help, and i apalogize for my retardness with all this.....

Just use a cd drive and put the drivers on your computer somewhere. Then when windows ask you for the driver brose to it, wherever you put it.

alright thanks again,... i got it working finally....

one of the pins was bent on my floppy and it was just messing everything up,... i fixed that and now it works... and the driver worked too,... thanks XDAAWG.. the reason i couldnt do the cd route was bc i dont have a cd burner on my other comp (the one that had the workin internet and the drivers)

anyhoot, good new is i got it workin... so now its on to the other problems... for example my computer occasionaly re-boots at random....im told this is a glitch of xp pro... and my friend gave me a ambigious copy of xp so i dont know if im allowed to download windows updates with it or not,... but the reboots are kinda annoying to say the least... ill talk to my friend who says he has a NEW copy of xp with a bunch of programs like photosshop cs, illustrator, norton anti-virus,  and all sorts of stuff like that,.... so i guesss ill see if that one works much better,... but i dunno.... it sounds pretty HAXOR styles or wuteva that cool word is...

(im thinking it may end up being better to just buy it in the long run eh? what, with all these glitches and such, just sooo much money that i dont have)

Hopefully some of this wil help you out. I got this info from another site.

First make sure you have all the latest Drivers (particularly your graphics card)
#To find out what hardware you have, use
Aida32 http://www.aida32.hu...load.php?bit=32
#To get your hands on the latest drivers
www.driverguide.com

You need to find out whatÂ’s going on. XP by default will reboot if it has a problem, you need to turn this feature off!

If your using "classic Mode" Right click "My Computer" >Properties >Advanced > In the "startup and recovery section click "Settings" > Untick "Automatically restart"
If your not using Classic Menu Start >Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System >Advanced > In the "startup and recovery section click "Settings" > Untick "Automatically restart"

Now If Windows has an error it will normally stop with an error message, you will need to pastes the "Entire" error message here.

*****Other things to consider*****

Bad RAM : This can cause random reboots to check yours use

CPU Overheating: Your system will reboot to protect itself, monitor your CPU heat with
Hmonitor (1 Month Trial) http://www.hmonitor.com/
OR

For CPU operating Temperatures follow this link

Underpowered or failing PSU (Power supply unit) PSU output is rated in watts (W) its capacity SHOULD be written on it, what is it?

Unlikely but you may be infected with a virus go to

99% of the time when a floppy light is on all the time its 1 thing,, you have the floppy cable turned backwards. you knowticed the cdrom and hard drive cables have a little notch that tells you which way is up  the floppy dont..

but as long as a bent pin was all it was,, well good deal.

seriously though my friend, i havent read everything in this thread but sure seems to me that your PC is just dieing out.
you said it was your mom old one or was that just the modem.

with all these issues id look into just trashing it and spending 500 dollars on one of the budget pc's from gateway or dell. id say buy your own parts and make your own but it seems you havent reached that level yet.

how old/what speed is that pc anyways.

alright,... well i got a new version of xp and havent installed AOL (i think that was a BIG part of the restarting problem last time) and everything seems to working much better....

the WHOLE computer was my mom's with an 800mhz cpu and some other crappy crap crap.... so i went out and bought a new mobo, new cpu (amd athlon 2400+) and some new memory 512kb  i installed it all my self so i do have some skizills (note the SOME) i think most of the problems i was having were software (i.e. drivers) related,... so everything should be runnin better this time around

thank you again XDAWG for the unbeliavable amount of info... i thank you soo much for going out of your way to help me out,... that goes to all of you who helped

i will eventually want to get aol on to the computer tho... since i have no other form of internet here,... but when i put the disk in there now,... its saying its not supported by my system's format or sumthin.....  i guess it might have to do with me re-formatting my HDD in NTFS (<--- i think thats what it was,... the other one besides FAT32) so i dunno if aol doesnt work with ntfs or what,... but i have overriden that message box yet and just put aol on,.... cuz im scared it'll do what it did last time.....

thank you all
