Retro Controllers

What would be the best and cheapest way to connect two nes controllers, and two snes controllers, for use with emulators on the xbox?
I know about the VGA cable mod, but would it be possible to bypass the xbox controller?

So instead of
OldPad >> Xbox Controller >> Xbox
OldPad >> Xbox Controller >> Xbox

I could have
OldPad >> Xbox
OldPad >> Xbox

I was thinking about modding the OldPad to USB, then just plug that into my existing usb hub in my xbox.

Would this work?
