Sony Dvd Burner Slam
« on: January 26, 2004, 05:20:00 AM »

I have a Sony Dru14 or some such model dvd + and - rw.  Its about 4 months old.  about a week ago it started making a really sick sounding series of clicks while trying to read/write dvd's and cd's.  Well this writer came with a system i paid an ungodly amount of money for so i was pretty upset it was doing this.

In hopes it was something easy i took it apart last night.  I cleaned the laser with a cutip and the white disc also.  Without putting it completely back together I hooked it back to the pc.  I watched it and saw what the clicking sound was.  The laser goes to read the cd then slams itself back on the stopper.  It did it over and over again.  Messing around with it i put my finger in between the laser and the stopper so it wouldn't slam so hard into the stopper, only into my finger.  It hit my finger, at the same time as I decided to put it back together and try to sell it on ebay as NIB (just kidding)  I shorted the exposed underside of the drive out on accident against my medal case and at which point i decided to give up. I put it back together and started surfing pricewatch for a replacement.  About 20 minutes later i decided to give it one more try before i threw it in a box in my junk chest.  When i tried it again, It worked perfectly Read a cd and wrote 2 dvd's without a single clicking sound.

so I have two questions:
1.  Why would the laser keep slaming itself into the stopper?  I have read a post where other cdr/dvdr drives have done this but never seen a solution or a reason.

2.  What was the fix?  Anyone know if it will stay fixed or if this drive has been granted a temperary reprieve and is still dieing a slow death.
