Games Will Freeze, Dvds Ok
« on: March 31, 2007, 10:57:00 AM »

I've been using my xbox only to watch movies for a year now and today I tried playing my old games and didn't work.  I would get either a dirty or unrecognized disc error or sometimes it'll freeze.  Is my dvd rom dead?  time to change the lens or the whole drive?  thanks

Hi

Your dvd drive is not dead, you just need a new laser unit,i think it is called. Depending on what dvd drive you have it could be better to get a samsung if you plan on playing backups and things on dvd-/+ r discs.

Thats good to know.  I also  found out that I have a thomson drive and replacement lens is cheap.  I might get one.  BTW, are you saying only samsungs are capable of playing back ups?  I'm planning to soft mod it so I can play backups as well.

No; any dvdrom will play backups. However, the Sammy drives are the best - they read 99.9% of media. Thompsons, on the other hand, have a helluva time reading cds and some burnt dvds. Basically, you get what you pay for: the Thompsons are pretty cheap, but Sammy's are a much better drive.
