i dont know what its like at school, but at home i use a hardware firewall/router and i have to make it open the range of ports that bittorrent uses or else downloads go slow...REALLY slow...like 2k/s max.  anways, i suggest you use "azureus"..its a java based bitorrent client with lotsa features.
