do the swap trick  tongue.gif

get an original PSX game (preferably something with a lot of audio tracks)

and you'll need something to hold down the lid sensor.

QUOTE
Insert your original CD.

o  Remove the original CD when the motor changes to 2x and replace it
     with your backup CD.

[If you did this right, you *SHOULD* see the black PS screen now.]

o  Watch and listen to the CD motor.  It will slow down and then
     speed back up to 2x.

o  After a few seconds, the CD motor will slow down again.  Replace
with your original CD once again.

o  After another half second or so, the original CD will speed up again.
     Finally replace your backup CD.

from the gamefaqs swap faq http://www.gamefaqs....ame/916392.html

Alternatively all of the modchips made for the PSX were just pic chips, if you can find the hex you can flash your own for about $2 worth of parts (chip + wire) if you don't have a programmer I'm sure you could find someone to program it for you. There are only 6 or 8 VERY EASY wires to solder (depending on your model) and backups/imports/homebrew will play on that console just as well as originals do.

don't buy those stupid plug mods, they're expensive and they basically just make the swap trick easier to do.

His pricing would be correct.
I last paid 35p each for these (UK Currency).
Brings back memories of Xmas past when I would chip 10 to 20 a day in the weeks running up to Xmas.
Not chipped one for donkeys years now.
Edit
A quick UK search reveals them here http://www.crownhill...ct.php?prod=159 not as cheap as I got them trade but still cheap.

I haven't ordered one in quite a long time but I don't remember paying more then $1 and change for them when I was doing PS1 mods... I'd almost always order them from digi-key as they have good prices and even better bulk pricing.

"xxCxx" PICs should be dirt cheap as IIRC those are write once/non rewritable chips designed for cheap mass production unlike the "xxFxx" rewritable models.

If the price is significantly higher then it's probably because they're phasing out the chip (or canceled the chip altogether)... once they stop making a certain model they'll jack up the MSRP to get people to buy the newer models instead (why pay more for an old chip when the newer one is faster, has more features and is cheaper). Usually 3rd party vendors will just sell at the old price until stock is depleted so you might have better luck shopping for them some place other then directly with Microchip.

Thanks guys!  Digikey has them for about $2.45 (small order) which is much better than $9 a pop.

Is it relatively easy to rewrite code from one pic or another, I have plenty of 12f629's and 83's around.  Also, I am not really sure what hex I would flash anyway, so the ability to flash more than once would sure be nice.

if you've only got the hex... then it's probably next to impossible.

if you've got the original source it's pretty damn easy.

you might try looking for some kind of conversion tool but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

The easiest way is to order a modchip for $4 from a place like Eurasia.  No programming  required. Just solder the chip in your PS1 and you are good to go.
