Multiple Hds Problem
« on: March 15, 2007, 10:43:00 PM »

I have a 160 gig and a 320 gig both installed in my xbox with a 5 device IDE cable from the llama.  I have a switch installed so that I can switch the power between both hds.  Except I'm having trouble getting the 320 gig to work.

Ok.  So here is the scenario.  My 160 gig works regardless where it is plugged in on the IDE cable or if the 320 gig is plugged in also.  However, the 320 gig only works if it is the only hd plugged in.  Once if I plug in the 160 gig the 320 quits working (it locks up at the xbox logo).  It doesn't matter where I have the hds plugged in or in what order I have them plugged in, as long as both the 320 gig and 160 gig are both plugged in the 320 gig locks up (the 160 gig always works fine tho).  I have tried just about every jumper combination of master, slave, and cs with no luck.  I'm kinda lost as to what to do or what is the problem.

Some additional info:  Xbox is a v1.2 with x3 chip and XBMC as the dash.  When the 320 gig hd locks up on the xbox start up logo, my x3logo still comes up under the xbox logo (which the x3logo is located on the hd) so it can still pull stuff off of the hd.  The C: and E: drives are identical in both the 160 and 320.

Sorry if that was confusing but it is kinda hard to explain.  I could maybe draw a diagram or something if it is needed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There is either one or two of the wires you can cut and switch that will allow this to probably work properlly, sadly i can't provide you with a link as i did this myself a long time back, however if you can search and dig it up, there are a few threads with the info around on this forum.

If i also remember rightly, there is one wire you can cut and leave disconnected that may very well help also.

And before anyone comes up with any silly comments, this fixed just about every dual / tripple HDD mod ive ever experienced problems with, and didn't slow down load times or change the way the xbox ran at all, it ran very reliably after, and ive done a few like this so i know it works well (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Good luck (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

No error codes...just locks up on start up.

Well I did some searching and seems that people who have the same problem as me have had success by installing a switch on wire 23 of a 40 wire IDE cable.  Does that sound familiar?  Except I'm using a 80 wire 40 pin IDE cable.  So which wire should I switch? 46?

Thanks!

Well I'm going to try installing a switch on wire 46.  I'm wishing I had a 40 wire IDE cable since those wires are much larger and then I know that wire 23 is correct.  O well.

Well switching wire 46 didn't help...the 320 still doesn't want to work when the 160 is plugged in.

Both hds are Wester Digital Caviars.
Model #s: WD1600 & WD3200

Any ideas?

Thanks

I swapped in a Phillips DVD drive from a 1.6 but the 320 still wouldn't work with the 160.

Any ideas?

Yeah sounds familiar to me.

There are two different setups some have used and have had success with, both at different times have worked time and time again for me, one of these methods involved switching two wires of the IDE cable, and not just the one.

I don't really understand what you mean though, why would you need 80 wires on a 40 pin ide cable? and what would the other 40 wires do?

Something sounds weird somehow.

If your using a 40 pin connector, then you still need to switch number 23 and not 46? providing wire 23 still connects to 23 on the connector then you still need to switch this one.

Make sure you get the right pin though, cause looking at it from either side could make you try the wrong one.

Hope this helps.

Cheers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

The IDE cable I'm using is an ATA/66 cable which means it has 80 wires as opposed to an ATA/33 cable which has 40 (like the stock xbox).  However, both use the same 40 pin connector.  The idea behind the ATA/66 is that they put a ground wire between each "data" wire on the IDE cable to reduce the cross-talk that occurs on the ATA/33.  This increases transfer speeds to and from the hdd.

So I still can't figure this one out.

Any ideas?
