Sata Wd Hdd Confirmation
« on: March 12, 2007, 02:55:00 PM »

Hello All
So far it was my understanding that an SATA HDD would not simply plug and play in an XBOX. However, I checked on the compatibility page for an HDD I have at my disposal. WD SATA 500gb Caviar 16 "WD5000KSRTL"

And it shows up at #7. The only thing i noticed was that it was not lockable.  Could someone shine some light on this?

A sata hard drive will work in an xbox but you must have a sata-ide adapter. The only way you can use a hard drive that is unlockable is if you have a chip or a flashed tsop. If you plan to boot retail or go on xbox live your hard drive must be locked.

I have a ST3320620AS, which is the SATA version of ST3320620A -- both of which do lock fine, I've tested. However, even locked, my Xbox won't recognize the drive properly, simply spitting out "error 13" on startup. This is with a SATA->IDE adapter.

So, does anyone actually have proof of getting a SATA drive to work on an Xbox? I haven't been able to find anything of the sort.

Error 13 means no dashboard, check to make sure your boot paths are correct and that something isn't corrupted.

Yes I have installed 3 WD 400gb sata hd's in 3 different xbox's with no problem. Check to make sure your dashboard is installed, and on the correct drive where your boot path is set to.

I have. Many times. I've installed this thing about 5 times through various methods. All of the files are there when I look at it through XboxHDM, but the Xbox itself won't read the drive.

Yes you need the adapter, if you have a chip it just means that you can run and xbox with an unlocked HDD

Thank you everyone for your input. So is something like this, the type of adapter you are referring to?

You would need this: Link

It needs to output IDE.

Thanks for the correction Fahadsaid.

So this looks like a simple solution except from the looks of this adapter, due to its vertical nature, i dont see it fitting in the Xbox chassis without some sort of modding. Am I correct?
And are there any other Cons to using a serial drive?

I have one that is just very slightly smaller than that. It will fit fine.

Search for "ADSAIDE", like here: http://www.provantage.com/addonics-adsaide~7ADDO16Y.htm
