nah.. these are definitely little torx screws... if you pop up the lens housing and look underneath where the ribbon comes out.. there are two tiny ass screws that are torx...
i will try to get pics,. but maybe if someone else know what size they are?

I've tweaked over 20 gamecube lasers, and I can tell you that you are going about it the wrong way. From what you are saing it sounds like you are trying to access the POT by taking the it apart from the top. That is the wrong way to do it, and is infact, not even possible that way.

What you need to do, is follow the guide located HERE.

And yes, every screw inside the gamecube(except for the two you are trying to remove) are philips. And those two you are trying to remove, should not be removed.

also.. i am only doing this because it will not read retail discs... only sometimes after messing with it, it will load a couple times... then on startup, just spins a second trying to read, then goes dead.

very old gamecube, dont know version, owned by my niece and shes left it on for 10's of hours at  a time on harvest moon and animal crossing. maybe 100's of hours.

AND... how exactly do i measure this pot value... do i have to have the GC plugged in obviously? turned on? im new to thispicking up a multimeter in a few from sears... never used one, heh.

thanks a bunch

Don't have the gamecube plugged in...

Ohms = Resistence

So, when you are measuring the ohms, you are measuring the resistence between two points. In this case, you are measuring(and adjusting) the resistence of the laser's POT. Turning it clockwise will increase the resistence, making the number go higher, and descreasing the lasers power. Turning it counter-clockwise will decrease the resistence, making the number go lower, and increasing the laser's power(and therefore making it be able to read discs more easily.

So to make it read the games again(if the laser is not completely dead), measure the ohms, and decrease it according to the below numbers.

If it is 300ohms or more, discrease it to the 190-210 range, And test. If it isn't reading games still drop it at about 25 ohms each time and and test.

If it is below 300ohms, drop it to about 150, then test it. If it still isn't reading games, go down to about 100 and try again. If it still isn't reading them, go as low as about 50ohms. If it's not reading games at that low, the laser is dead, and you can either purchase a replacement laser, or buy a new gamecube.

It's good that you got it to work. As long as it's working perfectly, don't lower the resistance any further since it MIGHT (this has never happened to me though) possibly damage the disk slightly. 150 is safe so keep it there. Lowering the resistance will allow the laser to read better but will also diminish the life of the laser diode. Usually not by much but since it wasn't reading anything well, you HAD to do it. I've had problems with the older GC lasers as well. Most of them were fixed with a pot tweak.
