Hey guys, I was just thinking it would be neat to write down the stories of your xbox disasters, and maybe even post pics(since people on this site dont read anything hardly LOL)

Anyways, i have a v1.0 that has been used and abused in so many ways, but still boots and has all the features of a regular xbox, plus its softmodded.

When i bought the xbox for $40, it had a dirty disc error. I've cleaned other kinds of drives before, so i opened up the tompson. I found the mirror was plated with dust and anonymous gunky substances. I cleaned it off, and plugged the yellow wires and IDE in. My main mistake was not putting bottom case for the drive on, and letting some of the pins touch the grounded metal case...

I Fried the drive beyond repair and fixed one trace on the motherboard. I put it all it, not realizing my unsheiled solders were touching the bottom of the metal case. I bought a broken xbox and replaced blown up drive with the samsung from the one i bought.

Fixed another trace...

Then, a thin piece of metal sheet got inside and under the PSU. I left it plugged in, and turned it upside down to put the screws in, while being plugged in. The peice of metal touched 3 pins and:

"KA-BOOM FLAME SPARK SIZZLE"

Small flames literally came out of the side fins. I removed the PSU to find almost all the transformers were dusted black. So, I went and got the PSU from the broken xbox i bought and converted it to the v1.0 plug, and its been fine ever since.

Anybody else got a story?

I'd imagine most people here have killed at least one xbox during their modding career. Personally, i've killed three

1. Bad ram upgrade (something went POP).
2. Took out a solderless modchip and it FRAGed (still don't know why).
3. Flashed TSOP with wrong MS kernel and had to buy a modchip to fix (Dont know if that one counts).

I've also killed a samsung 616t dvd drive, and a stock hdd with a hotswap.

I've lost count of the amount of cases i've thrown due to bad paint jobs/cuts etc...

I'm not bothered though, it's all part of becomming a better modder.

Ya, jimbobjim, ram upgrades are fairly tricky to do properly. I still have the motherboard from the xbox thaty i took the dvd drive and PSU from, and am thinking about installing an extra 64 mb, just for the heck of it. And those solderless modchips are very tricky... i dont understand how they can work when they're in but no longer when they are removed, or the xbox.

Ya, i accidentally grabbed a plugged in xbox PSU, from the bottom. That was scary... It zapped me pretty good.

I have also touched the psu while it was running. Somewhere on top I believe. Wasnt plesant. I also ended up on my ass. As for killed boxes. I thought I killed one but it ended up being a bad micro chip in the xbox to begin with.

Ya, i've had an incredible amount of bad luck... this xbox has been more of a pain than any other.But, all in all, it still runs, and i got a good story behind it.

I fried 2 traces on my Xodus modchip, I didn't realize the system was still on when I adjusted it. My "buddy" at a local game store with INCREDIBLE soldering skills fixed the chip.

Fortunately, I haven't destroyed an Xbox or Xbox 360 during my modding career. I've damaged a motherboard while performing my first LPC rebuild on a version 1.6 Xbox, but I managed to right my wrong.

I try to be extremely careful when handling someone else's console.

Ya, working with a clients xbox is a totally different ball game... I've always been extremely cautious with them.

My xbox has been a royal pain ever since I got it, screwy samsung drive, bad hard drive power plug, and many software problems.

But I haven't really fried anything, most I've done to fry something is I accidentally flung(solder connection to wire didn't stick and the wire popped backwards flinging solder) solder into the mobo connector for the dvd drive and turned my xbox on without a drive plugged in.  Noticed the solder after it was on turned it off, removed it but now my dvd drive is really funky only works half the time.

i was at my cousins house who has like one working xbox from three xbox's. he said the power supply on of them was dead and i told him that the fuse was probably bad. the two pins on the bottom looked fine where the power goes into the power supply. so we located the fuse and decided we would short-circuit the fuse using a pair of rubber handled pliers. so we plugged it in and shorted it out.    my cousin got a face full of sparks and i just about died laughing. we concluded the power supply is deffinately dead now. but all-in-all it was friggin awesome.

Managed to break a buddies xbox in '04 when i had no idea what i was doing. I fixed it a year later though

I'm getting my uncle to order in two 5.1v zener diodes for my eeprom reader so i can fix my broken v1.3, i cant find any, since i live in a town of 5000, way up north in "who cares anyway." Tomorrow, im hosting an all night LAN party, it's my xbox's debut! LOL Hopefully i can get some mods lined up and make a few buckzors...

It's strange, i've never heard of a corrupt eeprom in a stock xbox before. The xbox was never opened, never tampered with, and probably babied(I bought it from a friend, he's like that). But oh well, i payed $20 bucks for it, and it has a samsung 605b in it and everything else.
