Anyone Get To Try Nintendo Ds Yet?
« on: November 16, 2004, 10:05:00 PM »

I went to a Target in the Houston, TX area and was surprised to see a Nintendo DS console there for display/demo and there was no one there so I started playing and I have to say graphics wise its amazing. I played the Metroid game. It was a demo version though. It had 5 control schemes and one was good but still awkward as the DS was stuck in place. When you power the system on you're presented with the main screen that allows you to start the game or go to settings or go to the PictoChat program. The pictochat program is neat. you just write with your stylus and send. And of the 2 screens only the bottom screen is touchscreen. The touchscreen responded perfectly except for a small area towards the right that didnt register the touch properly and I hope its not a factory flaw or else it'll be a big let own when people get it as the games utilize the touchcreen and in metroid game, there were different things you could do with tthe touchscreen. One control scheme would use the touchscreen to control the look/aim and shoot with tap. I'm too sleepey to completely tell you what I felt in the 20 mins I played the DS for. I startted thinking after I got back home that if DS pulls of these amazing graphics, just imagine what PSP will do and just a few years in the future and we'll have holographic gaming kiosks maybe? Anyone else got to play DS yet or am I one of the lucky ones who got to try it.

Well, there shouldn't be any region-lock so you could always order one from the US (that's what I'm going to do if I decide to get one - well, Canada actually).

BTW, anyone know when the DS will be coming out in Europe/Australia?  Some say Easter, some say February and others say before Christmas.

I got it yestarday

I dont have a game (besides the demo it comes with) cuse there nothing right now i would pay 30 bucks for ...

I was suprised on how well the Metriod demo controlled with the stylus. My only problem is i cant get my hands in right postion to make comfortable so i end up changing postions like every few mintues. But now im just waiting for sombody to exploit it in some way so i can further customize. It picking a color for the background and naming your ds is about a custom as it gets. It asks your bday but it dosent do anything on that day but i could be wrong

well i decided to buy it and SM64DS and am happy to say it was worth it! the web pics and movies dont do it any justice. the metroid demo with the touchscreen are amazing and just shows what the capabilities are! i cant wait for the PSP but the DS is a great way to pass the time! beerchug.gif

Wait until coders port a full speed snes emu on it, believe me, it's coming.  biggrin.gif

It only has a 67MHz ARM-9 CPU,  My Asus a620 pocketpc with 400 MHz doesn't even run all snes games full speed.

Nes would work, GBA can run some of those decently.

Well I personally don't have a gba flash cart to test the emulator on real hardware, but just by running pocketSNES for gba through the GBA emulator on my Xbox I can say it's quite impressive. Even though there is massive frame skip, this was all done on a 16MHz ARM7, I'm sure wonders could be done moving the majority of the work over to the 67MHz ARM9. Also remember, the DS has two processor, the second of which is the same type found in the GBA only twice as fast. So believe me I think we're in for an intersting ride. I have faith we should see some fairly decent SNES emulation on the DS.

Keep in mind the Pocket PC is also running the OS.
I don't think SNES is outside the realm of possibility.
If it doesn't happen, that's fine too. What I'd love is some sort of upgrade to the GBA engine. Something that could possibly change the controls for it...
