i got a buddy that did his xbox...threw a sata...the same one this guy is looking for...into there...never failed

No reason why it shouldn't work, but why use the SATA version of the PATA one?

Really? Because I couldn't get this to work for the life of me.


I've tried several methods of installing a new hard drive. I cloned my 80GB drive onto the 320GB to no avail. Xbox booted up with an error (11? I don't remember).

Next, I tried creating a disk from scratch, and then using the contents of C and E only from my current softmodded 80GB drive. The result? Error 13.

Finally, I used the Ndure installer and CD. This didn't work either, ended up as error 13 again.

I've dumped my EEPROM with two different programs and locked with all of the available Xbox locking tools on the DOS disk and Linux CD just to make sure one wasn't flaking, so it is not a locking/security problem.


Isn't error 13 is supposed to be the kernel/dashboard version mismatch error? I don't see why I am getting it if I am using the exact copies of C and E from my current drive.


I'm using the 5101 kernel. I've attached a SATA to IDE adapter to the back of my Seagate ST3320620AS, which works fine on my PC (note that this forces the drive to be the master, so the DVD-ROM on the Xbox becomes the slave -- this seems to not be a problem with my IDE drive when I set the jumper to master. Just a note that I thought I'd throw out there). My old drive is a Samsung SV0802N (80GB, 5400 RPM, 2MB cache) -- works like a charm.


One thing to note is that my PC is not detecting the drive properly, because it only shows 137.4GB. Unfortunately, the two desktop PCs in this house do not support LBA48 -- only my laptop does, and that isn't much help for connecting this drive. Could this LBA48 problem be the cause of my hard drive not working in the Xbox? I doubt it, but maybe someone out there has more experience with this issue.

I spent the whole day reading through every single post about SATA drives through IDE on the Xbox, and while I found a few posts of people having success with this method, there weren't any guides or answers to my questions.

I have a different converter than you, however, from what i've read the one that you have is better.  Is your xbox softmodded or hardmodded?

Ive got a hardmodded box.  I suppose i could just throw it in my pc, transfer the drives with all the files, and throw it in the xbox to see if it works

I dont have a jumper setting on mine.  I cant just set it to master on the actual drive instead of the converter?

EDIT:  Is the jumper that small gray thing?  Im used to seeing black jumpers?

Nope, SATA only supports one drive per connection, so they are always "master".

This is a jumper:


They usually come in black, gray, or white (edit: actually, they come in any color). If that is what you have, you've got the jumper. Check the instructions for your adapter for where to plug it in to set it as master.
