Clock Capacitor 1f Aerogel
« on: January 29, 2007, 10:56:00 AM »

I am looking for a replacement for this capacitor and am not having any luck. Mine seems to be dead. If I unplug for more than about 45 seconds, I need to set the clock. I have also seen damage to mobos when it leaks so I would like to replace it before then. Anyone know where to get one? I was hoping to pick one up locally to avoid shipping on such a small item but it doesn't look like Radio Suck has them. Any ideas? (I am in Minnesota if anyone knows of a place locally.)

Thanks.

The only place I know where to obtain one is from Jaycar Electronics here in Australia. They stock a 22 and a 55 Farad cap, but the 55 Farad is a tad too large:
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/
Where it says "Browse Product", select Capacitors as the catagory, and then select Super Capacitors for the sub-catagory.
If you do buy one from Jaycar, your going to have to lay the capacitor horizontally, otherwise it won't fit properly.
You'll find that by using the 22 Farad cap, the time and date should last up to a week with the power fully disconnected from the X-Box.
I hope the above helps.

How about this bad boy? I it a little bigger than a quarter but I think it could be bent down a little. Do you think it would work?

I ask because I think the person I bought this xbox from replaced the original with one that looks to be 5v and it doesn't work for crap. So I would like to replace it and make it work before it REALLY messes up the system.

Thanks for any and all help. I am not that good with electronics (as you can tell).

A 5 volt cap shouldn't have been used. I guess the fella was desperate.

@ J_K_M_A_N - Do you have a v1.6 XBOX? If you don't then DO NOT use that capacitor, you need one rated at 5v for the older version consoles.

@ DarkMatter - The AeroGel is rated at 5v (older versions) or 2.5v (v1.6). Installing a 5v cap in it's place is fine, but the uF of it, unless it's either really close to or in the F range, just makes it pretty pointless.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

No offence, but your wrong. Every version (1.0 to 1.6) I've seen here in Australia are all rated at 2.5 volts. I've already replaced more than a dozen so far for customers and I've never seen any rated at 5 volts.
In fact, since about a year ago, I started checking all aerogel caps that I do mod installs to. I started doing this because the early X-Box's are showing signs of leakage. I even check them on V1.6's, but I've yet to find a stuffed one on a 1.6.

Actually I have a 1.4. Pretty much everything I have read says it is a 1F 2.5v on all xboxs. Now I am confused. I will have to check my other box which is also a 1.4. I will let you know. I am pretty sure I glanced at it though and it was a 1F 2.5V but I will double check.

@ DarkMatter - You're half right, I went back and looked at my v1.0s and the do have a 2.5v cap in them. I could swear up one side and down the other I've seen a 5v 1F in one somewhere though, I have the pics name 5v 1F, but you can't see the sides in them. It's possible it was a 2.5v also and the 2. was worn away from it, so on that I'll stand corrected. But, you can place a 5v cap in spot of a 2.5v one, what you don't want to do is go lower in voltage rating, that's bad. It also depends on the type of circuit, but in this case a higher rated one would be fine.

@ J_K_M_A_N - Don't worry about it, now we all learned something.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Does anyone have a picture of the clock capacitor? I'm not sure exactly which one is being replaced. How long does the stock capacitor keep the clocks charge?

Unfortunately my PC that has all my pictures is dead at the moment. But the cap in question is near contoller ports 1/2 on the motherboard connector on version 1.0~1.5. On the version 1.6's its close to the IDE connector.
The capacitor looks like all the other electrolytic caps. Its cylindrical, around 10mm in height, around 8mm wide and is dark in color. You need to look on the side of each cap until you find one marked 1F 2.5V, or in some cases 5V, but I'm yet to be convinced on that.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Usually around three hours.
