Ps2 Mod Nood Questions
« on: June 18, 2003, 02:01:00 PM »

OK, i've had a PS2 for some time now, but ever since i got into xbox modding i've put it aside.  Now i bought a DVD burner and am excited about my PS2 again because now i can burn backups of my games and play them.  Just a few startup questions.

1.) How do i know what version i have?

2.) What chip is a good one, where can i get it?

3.) How easy is it to burn the games?  Do i just just do a straight file copy or is it more complicated like the xbox and with burning iso images.

4.) Do you know any links to good tuts on how to open up the case and sodlering points?

5.) Any other things i should know, hints or tips?

thanks guys this forum has got me going in the past i hope it still can.

I like the Messiah2 out of all those that are available.  The DMS3 is decent, too, but it's far too overpriced.

It's easier than the Xbox, but I generally wouldn't recommend a Disc-to-disc copy with Easy CD Creator.  I use RecordNow Max and create a Global Image, then burn that to DVD-R.  Perfect backup everytime.

I consider http://www.ps2newz.net to be the best PS2 modding site out there.

The PS2 is much less forgiving of newbies.  You may want to consider having a professional install your mod.  The Messiah2 is 23 wires, for example.  And they're not big, fat LPC points.  They're vias...and IC legs...and other barely-visible-to-the-naked-eye components.

seriously u may get better info from a ps2 forum :)

start in

1) Ps2newz  u would need to register to see/read all the forum threads i think

2) ps2ownz same thing

3) PSXforums this has got most of the info regarding version/modchips/how to backup etc etc in there, a bit old but still works most of them...

WOW thanks a lot for all the quick info, but can you give a lonk to where i can purchase the messiah 2? thanks.
yeah i have heard that modding the ps2 is a bitch, i had a friend do my xbox because i was scared of the d0 point but he did it alright.  is it true that there are no points as small as the d0 on the xbox?  thanks a lot already though both of you are a great help

I purchase my Messiahs from http://www.foundmy.com - they have them for $35.  Where did you hear that the d0 is harder than any PS2 point?  The d0 is a freaking joke compared to the PS2 points.  They're at least that small (many are smaller) and there are 22-24 of them, depending on the chip you use.

I use Samsung Beall media for my PS2, though older drives like V4s sometimes require tweaks to read it.  A lot of people recommend Ritek G04, but it has become so popular that it may be difficult to find in stock.

media issues, never save on medias for your dreaded PS2... coz the fuxxer ps2 lasers diode for dvd-r will go if u do.... lousy Sony's factory recalibration... :)

Apple, Verbatim, Mitsubitshi, Pioneer, Ritek G03/G04 (Ridata = Ritek's Own Brand Name), erm that's about the media that i've used... hehe fine so far..

May i also suggest in the future that you only tweak your lasers as long as you find your ps2 is having problems reading dvd-r whilst using medias that is supposedly good like those above. You may be one of the lucky ones that got a great unit from Sony with better laser calibration out of the factory... just check the readings when u do the mod to see the tolerance level of your lasers...

1) Has anyone gotten the newer versions that reads Dvd-r/dvd-rw straight out the factory and without the i-link ports?... ps2 version 9 i think...

2) Has anyone having problems or had problems with dvd-rw for the ps2?... i've got a version 5 and it boots dvd-rw extremely well..... I wanna use this dvd-rw but i am afraid that this may be the issue of booting up fine at first but will eventually kill the lasers...<---- anyone tried and been successful for a looooooongggg time?

kind regards

i've got two units...haha...one for using with imports, and one for US originals....don't really deal with backups since I keep all my games in emaculate condition....

without my games, i'd be nothing...how sad...haha.
