I've done two 8163B's it's not difficult if you have some soldering skills but it takes a bit of time.

The only place to get them is eBay really.  Last one I picked up for £15 inc. p&p.

8163B works awesome on modded and unmodded boxes.
The 8164 works great on always-on modded boxes only.  It won't play originals unless the xbox is modded!

8164 also has problems reading dual layer discs. I'd go with the 8163 if I were you.

Best choice if you had the cash and patience would be the Samsung SD616T

hi deadparrot,

how're the drives working ? any glitches?

have you tried a 8164B? I've seen a bunch of stores in my area selling these. I was going to try one if I can't get an 8163B.

They work perfectly.  One I sold and one I use myself.

I never tried an 8164B.  I had one sent to me when I ordered an 8163B, but that was before the adapter came out so I sent it back.

like how much cash ? and how far off roughly?

what so special about this one? does it work plug and play out of the box or something?
the thread I saw only mentioned them briefly.

thanks.

Cash, quite a bit.
Quality, excellent (even uses similar laser as the Sammy 605b).
Also works great on modded & unmodded xbox.

8164 can't read dual layer discs properly AND it only works with modded xboxes.
If you ever try to boot stock, it won't read genuine game discs.

Hey you guys, I found a Samsung TS-H352 PC DVD Drive on sale nearby and wanted to know if it's a suitable replacement for my dead Sammy. I hadn't heard of the model before, but I found a guide in German that shows you how to mod it and use it as a replacement -- but again, I hadn't heard of this model number being used before and wanted to know what you guys thought. Have any of you worked with one of these before?

Sure.  You don't even have to use SMD resistors.  Well, I didn't.

I wanted to ask a couple of questions before jumping into doing this.

I've read that I need to make a bootdisk . is any version dos bootdisk is ok?

after booting into dos , do I just type sf8163.exe 8050L.dld 2 /f /c /p /o and its done?

is there any way to backup the original FW?
