I would hardly call soldering a switch to two points a real region-free hack.  REAL region free would obviously include PAL and not need a switch.  If Nintendo really cared about people doing that, they could just not have two big points ripe for the soldering.

It's not so much about "accepting" importers, it's more likely to be because Nintendo can create only one NTSC model, and ship that out with the differences being the packaging, the power cable and the zero ohm resistor over this point. It's like how TV manufacturers produce TVs with all TV formats built in (PAL, PAL60, NTSC4.43, NTSC3.58, SECAM, etc) and only change the power cable and the packaging. It's more economically viable that way.

Who the hell know what kind of os the gamecube is running.  It sure isn’t windows ce like the dreamcast was.

Actually, the DC had support for WinCE, but didn't use it as the working OS

Couldn't a group of people join to form a business and purchase a disc presser like Datel bought in order to manufacture backup games...or would Nintendo have the legal authority to eliminate such a business?

Nintendo would come down on them like a ton of bricks. In any case, Datel apparently paid £100,000+ for their disc presser (My source is The Electric Dr. G, the admin on Datel's forums who also works for them), which would deter pirates further. Datel haven't been got at yet because their products don't allow playing pirated games.

What we have here is a similar problem as the DC. Its now not a problem to get the data off the GC disks, its gettin the dammed thing to boot. The dreamcast only booted backed up games because it was acctualy made to do that, it was ment for developers such as datel, and bleem to boot CDs, instead of GD-ROMS, hence making it easier for the developer so they didnt hav to licence there code, or burn their data on the properioty GD-ROMS. The GD-ROMS were just oversized CD's, and could be read quite easily in certain cdrom drives that could read 99 mins+. Eventualy some smart alec will come along and find some flaw in the GC, as they did with the DC, but we must remember, nintendo hav always been the best in the industry at taking anti-piracy methods, yeh, the nes, snes, n64 were hacked, but anti pirate methods are designed to stop the general public from being able to copy the games, im betting that 90% of the population have never heard of the customised methods of booting the backup games on the consoles nintendo designed. Nintedo have always put their games on media 99% of the population can't easily read, unlike the PS1 + PS2. Back in the day of the PSX + N64 console war, from what I remember, the backup industry wasn't exactly 'booming' for n64 games, unlike the PS1.

Too true. It may have existed, but the high price of flash cartridges and the inability to play them on CD-Rs without an extra device will have put people off.
