well, i for one, agree that the hardware design is both simplistic yet secure enough but i would never be sure coz i am not in the design team nor a hardware engineer! hehhee..

but then again, i think all your choices are valid though...
but the constant thing that has been interesting to NOTE AT THE MOMENT is how datel managed to get their code to run on the gamecube to allow playing imports ! i for one would surely don't believe that datel actually got permission officially signed from nintendo??.. or did they?... coz if they could get their code to run assuming it's unsigned, then the cube has been hacked ! ... just that probably they are protecting certain legal stuffs to publish the way or the know-how. Maybe also release groups aren't interested?... as mini-dvd are not readily available ?... hehe...

But currently i am developing a liking for the cube... so i don't care.. if i like it too much in due time, i would gladly buy it and play some good games on it ! ... whether or not it's considered silly games or childrens' games, well as long as it's fun to play alone or with friends, it's okay with me ! ..

Another thing to consider would probably that cube has been popular in japan, very strong and not so popular in western countries!... and may i remind you ppl that from my previous experiences living for a short while in japan visiting friends etc... ppl there do not or extreeeeemely resort to piracy ESPECIALLY with games! ... it's strange but it's good in a way for the industry coz my friend told me that it's considered a shame/embaressment even to borrow a game from your friend when u can buy it ! lol....

Good concept no doubt... spread some to your friends who are doing the no no ...hehe..

regards

From my understanding, Datel had a very hard time getting the prototype unsigned(non-licensed) Freeloaders to work consistently and they ended up having to pay Panasonic to press the real discs(meaning they are licensed)...so it hasn't been hacked.

In my far-fetched opinion, I think M$ & $ony have been paying off any hackers from making a chip.  I would think it would be more of M$'s doing because if the GC did have the ability to play backups it would destroy the XBox in sales since the GC has a lot more better(& exclusive) games.

Excluding the mindless drone fanboys comments...

I think it's just a more of the fact that it would be more trouble then it would be worth. As in, to do it your going tos pend a ton of money, and making a dump of the game probably isn't all that easy.
I think the first time anything mainstream gets out will be from a addon to the gamecube...dunno though, I don't care much for it
Plus the fact you can get the hot titles for it for $20, makes the trouble undesireable?

personaly I think it's the disk drive size that's stoping the development of a mod-chip, Once someone figures out how to hook-up an extrenal HD or make gamecube size disks then a modchip will quickly fallow.

I think it kinda interesting that (as far as I know) no nintendo console has ever been able to run backup games.

well, it is perfectly acceptable to play originals on it.. without the luxury of making backups to protect the original disks... but i wish i could..hehee

until that day come, which i doubt it will, i will NOT let my games be touched by anyone BUT myself, coz i bought them ! lol.... and you guys were talking about it's a kid's console...screw that!... kids don't understand how expensive these games can get! ...smile.gif    ps2 and xbox different issue... they can play whatever they want on cheap medias and loading from hd hehehhe

I heard that the smaller (GameCube) sized DVD-Rs ARE available, but are quite expensive. I also head that GC disc images are available, but I think that might have been an Apiril fool's joke).

n64 had these huge add-on things to rip and play backups....  Some models had a cd attachment.
But anyways I have no clue why the gc hasn't been modded.......
