pop.gif [/QUOTE]Why bother modding the drive, why not make an external drive which would plug into one of the ports at the bottom of the cube? I could see this working.

That would probably be the way to do it if the GC drive can't read dvd/dvd-r.

Either connect a dvd-rom or a hard drive.  That would probably end up being many, many wires though...but if it could be done I wouldn't complain about it.

Hmmm, isn't that what I basically implied when I was talking about how the N64 was modded to play backups.  Obviously the common joe didn't have cartridges that they could backup to so they made external devices that took ZIPs and CDROMS that plugged into the N64 and made it think it was a cartridge.

But I agree, probably better to use more hardware for a gamecube mod.

well this seems to be the idea at the moment. Use the gameboy connecter plug in to trick it into playing games. Think about it, we wouldnt have to worry about burning issues or copyright protection because gameboy doesnt have that. The problems we face are 1.Getting a media that is big enough to hold the games 2. backing up the games and 3. getting the media to connect to the gamecube

The only mod i have seen for GC is a cosmetic paint job mod...oh yeah and someone added another heatsink one time. And you can add a switch for japanese game compatability.

thats about it

I was under the impression the the gamecube q could make/play backups, anybody have any info on this?

The mod allows the Q to play these extra's:
- US GC software
- All region DVD's/dvd-r's
- All region VCD's
- MP3 cd-r's (maybe dvd-r's)

It doesn't have the switch to switch the GC region...you hold the power button for 3 seconds to boot US.  (There are other mods for it, but this one I have is the "latest & greatest" so to say.)

I haven't really tried everything on mine. I don't have enough time to play with it.  I really only got it for playing VCD movies at friend's houses without needing a PC, but unfortunately it doesn't convert the Video output into NTSC(USA).  After trading for some cammed-VCD's I wanted to see, I found that out and now I really have no use for it (since I already finished Metroid Prime biggrin.gif ).  Most traders don't know what they are sending you since all video output will play fine on a PC.

After Nintendo announced the GBA player for GC and said it won't work with the Q, I decided it may be time to sell it and get a regular GC with the GBA player.  But i'm holding onto it until someone verifies that the GBA player works with the flash cards.

Yosco, I could see silvers coming out but they would probably not be worth it.  Since it would be a specialized process to press a GOD, you can bet their price would be more than the standard $5 dvd silver.

OKay, I'm no expert but ...

It's not going to be easy if you stick to the original case/hardware ... so youd need an external box - not a problem.

Backing up games has been done - I have no idea how, and don;t really care, but it's been done!

To stop the physical protection get an external DVD drive and wire it in place of the mini drive that's in there ... similar to replacing the Xbox one. This will hen read the correct media. There will have to be some gubbins to convert the signals from one to another, but not impossible. This is the hard bit. If someone was really clever they could even use a HDD instead (similar to the N64)

Then need a mod chip to remove whatever software protection there is. Every other system that i can think of has been chipped ... so the Gamecube can be too - I should imagine this is the easy part.

Then stick all 3 together and hey presto.

I'm not an expert at this, but the Xodus or XEcuter teams obviously are.

All I do know is that and chip will be popular and make the designers a LOT of cash user posted image

Supposedly there are 2 different lasers in the Q, 1 for reading dvd & the other for reading GC discs.

This is why the Q needs to be started in the proper mode.  In other words, if you're in DVD movie mode, you can't put a GC disc in and just push reset...you have to turn it off and then start in GC mode.

So what I'm saying is, the Q will probably not read a dvd-r since it is using the GC laser.
