1. If you don't want to solder, go a no solder chip. No solder chips require a "swap." V1-V6 consoles you can do the swap with either a Game Shark 2.0 disk or Swap Magic 2.0 disk. V7 consoles require Swap Magic 2.0 only to swap. If you are comfortable with soldering, go a Magic 3.1. Do a search on google. Many people sell them.

2. You make an image of the disk and burn the image. Pretty much the same as PS1.

You're going to need a DVD for MOST games on PS2. Unfortunatly, hack sceen for PS2 sucks. You are going to need a burner. Good news is, they are under 200 now.

right you are, The good news is that the no-solder chips for the PS2 are a better fit unlike the no solder pogo-pins available for the xbox.  I'm not fond of the swap but if that is no big deal for you then this will work great and the other advantage is that you won't have to worry about hooking your ps2 up to the computer for originals.  you might try extreme-mods.com as they carry some PS2 chips but I'm not sure which ones.  I love my PS2 but since they have yet to come up with a no swap chip that is either solderless or requires only a few wires I will use my xbox with the Xecutor2 Lite.  I hope this helps

MorfiusX,

How so? How have you come to that conclusion?

If you are able to solder get ahold of the messiah 2 chip as that isn't plagued by problems unlike the magic chips.  It doesn't require a swap or anything like that.  I hope this helps

Hi there, in a previous thread I was asking about reasons for an Xbox owner to get a PS2. Now that I've been utterly convinced (read: GTA:VC,FFX :D), I've been reading up about modchips and/or swap methods. I have a couple of questions which I hope you guys might be able to help me out with.

1) I've read that soldered modchips are harmful to the lasers on PS2s. Is this correct? Is it because they change the behaviour of the laser on the PS2? Is it similar to the "pot tweaking" hack on the XS tutorials page?

2) If the issue in question 1) is true, I think I'd rather go for a swapping mod instead -- do these harm the lasers in any way? I'm thinking of getting the Swap Magic 2.0 discs -- which would you recommend to go with it: a flip-lid cover or a no-solder mod? Do they differ in the games supported? Would I still be able to play original PS2 games without hitches?

3) Finally, I read about such 'no-mod swap methods' such as cog/knife/LH -- people seem to refer to a tutorial on ps2ownz.com but I can't find anything there, just a portal site with links to other sites. Is there a good description of these methods? Do any of you use them in conjunction with Swap Magic 2.0?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on these issues!

Cheers,

Never heard of any damage to your laser from chipping.  The only thing that I know kills PS2 lasers are rips.  If you just do regular games it shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry about the double post. The cog knife method is the oldest way of getting a PS2 to play backups (and from what I understand is a royal pain in the ass).  It requires some tricky work with a screwdriver eachtime you want to play a backup and still requires a swap like the no-solder mods.  Esentially the cog knife method was replaced by the no solder mods and the swap discs. This method was around before there was a modchip of any kind available for the PS2.  I think they finally deleted the link since it was senseless to use this method with the advent of the no solder mods and swap discs because you stand a much greater risk of damaging your PS2 with the Cog knife method.
