If you have it laying flat, try standing the PS2 up on end.  I had the same problem and this fixed it for me.

ive heard that standing up yur ps2 will mess up yur ps2's dvdrom. something about the lens.

ive heard that the magic 3 has freezing problems with some games, though not all people experience it... most commonly freezing games are gta:vice city and kingdom hearts

err...they released an updated version of the magic 3 which fixes that.  it goes by the name of magic 3.1, or magic 3.6.  that should fix the problems.  apparantly there was a design flaw with the current magic 3's.

The dvd rom drives in ps2s are junk so I don't really care.  I only planned on it lasting about a year anyway.
