I have also heard about the panasonic machine being hack but not clear description of how they did it or what it is capable of playing

There are mod-chips, but only available for the Matsushita Q.

GC uses an. . .odd BIOS method. Long story short. No mod-chips. I believe there are some replacement drives in deveopement, but i'm not positive. I think the Matsushita Q is just modded for imports and DVD regional coding and Macrovision, which is cool, but not for $500.
