I'm betting that this is the system that you want if your planning on playing modded games on the Gamecube.

Panasonic's Gamecube version Plays Gamecube titles (Japanese and American versions) Playback of DVD movies (region 1-6, NTSC and if sold after the 20th of March 2002 also PAL) Plays RCE movies like The Patriot Plays Music CDs and Video CDs (VCD) Japanese/English on screen menue. Click here for instructions. Now also with Macrovision off.

Of course this system does go for $450 right now, but would be the perfect candidate if I really gave a toss about GC games =)

There's no mod chip for the GC.  I don't think a special burner would be needed, just a smaller dvd, like smaller cdr's that have become so popular.  However, GC uses double density dvd's, which no burner can make at the moment.

There is a modchip for the Gamecube, but it's only designed to let you play import games... www.digital-forums.com has a semi-active board on Gamecube hacking news

looks like nintendo's risky move to use a propertary drive is paying off for them... at least for now, all things can and will be cracked, but hooray to M$ using (almost) standard drives!
