Detroit has the best scouts in the league. Can't copy detroit.
Something you should know. The fans of Toronto, dictate how the team is run.
Toronto isn't allowed to have a "building year." Not makeing the playoffs, is simply unacceptable.
The formula for the leafs, is 25%, big name guys. Like belfour, Lindros, or Brian leetch. Superstars (at least at one point in their carrer) that will draw crowds.
20% heart players. People who work hard, and give hope to the fans. eg: wilm, tucker, roberts.
10% filler eg. antropov
Then you have four or five skilled players, like sundin, mcabe, kaberle, mogilny, who you give time to develope
Leaving very little room for rookies/new talent.
In toronto, every year is suppose to be the year. Fans here won't accept a building year. So it's very hard to make a team a contender. Don't forget injuries was the pleague this year. Lindros only played 33 games. Brian McCabe, Sundin, Tucker, Allison, all missed at least 10 games each. Belfour missed two months. Sundin got hurt the first game.
BTW - Toronto is a template for every other team. The Toronto Maple Leafs make the most money in the entire league. NYR is second.
