Unlocking A Hdd Without The Mobo
« on: November 20, 2006, 09:08:00 AM »

Hi,
My xbox died so I've bought a new one and installed a chip, the problem is my old HDD is locked to my old Xbox. Is there anyway of unlocking it without using the old xbox so that I can pop it into the new one?
Cheers

If you were smart enough to back up the eeprom and save it to the PC, like all the guides suggest, you can use it to unlock it.

Without the eeprom, and if it is not the standard Xbox HD, you will have to pay HDDunlock to unlock it. You will lose the data on it.

I don't know if an eeprom reader will read the eeprom off a dead MB or not. That may be your best shot. It is cheap to build, and you may be able to buy one in the BST section.

Remember, ALWAYS BACKUP!

If your Xbox's hard drive was locked using EvoX or XboxHDM, you can use ATAPWD to disable the drive's lock with the set master password of 'XBOXSCENE'. Similarly, if ConfigMagic was used to lock the drive, you would use the master password 'TEAMASSEMBLY'.

If your Xbox's hard drive was stock (and you don't mind losing the data off of it), you can use these methods to unlock it.

It was locked using Evox so all I need to get is this ATAPWD (I guess from xbins right?) and boot off the disc created with the HDD in as a primary master?

You can get ATAPWD from the main page here at Xbox Scene. There is a DL section of tools. You can also use it from Xboxhdm CD. It is in option 4 from the main menu.

The problem lies in having the eeprom. If the master passwords don't work and you don't have the eeprom.bin backed up to the PC, you are looking at the eeprom reader.

How was the first Xbox modded?

Did you back up any files from it?

Not the eeprom (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) so if the mater password does not work its a low level format and start a fresh xbox install??

Mind you saying that going threw Halo and Halo 2 seems like a challange for the next few weeks!

Who said that?

Just for 'the survey': why did you not backup your EEPROM? Is it that hard to save 256 bytes of crucial data?

Well ok sorry I did mean the Eeprom reader, but I dont need the data but I'd like to keep it.

As for the Halo and Halo 2 well I have spaces of 1hr or 2 so I can fill it kicking the covenant's arse.

And with the Eeprom backing up well I blame a mixture of Lazyness and ignorance (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Hi,
I connected the HDD and booted using the Xboxhdm CD-Rom. I'm having problems though, heres the steps I've taken:
Booted
chose option 3
typed "unlockhd -p XBOXSCENE" and pressed enter

I then get a message telling me that "Error, invalid password - must be less than 32 bytes (64 chars) and should be an even number of chars"

Help!
Cheers

edit1

OK I've now used atapwd with the password "XBOXSCENE" and no joy

Edit 2

Ok good news I was going threw an old HDD and I've found a backup of my C and E partitions. So hopefully the Eeprom is in there, if someone could tell me where and how to use it I'd be greatfull.
Cheers

Eeprom does not reside on a hard drive.
It's a physical chip on the motherboard. Unless you went through the process of dumping the contents of the eeprom onto your hard drive as a text file (eeprom.bin), you will not find it.

If you're still having problems unlocking the hdd, visit hddunlock.com and purchase 1 hdd unlocking card. It's only $3.00 and it'll unlock the drive for you.

If you have a stock Western Digital hdd, just use ATAPWD to unlock the hdd with the master password. Instructions can be found in the llamma.com link someone else already referred you to.

Hi,
Right sorry for the break but working 7 days a week does not leave much time to mess around with the xbox!

Right on the back up I have found a folder called "backup" in the root of C:, inside there are the following files:

bios.bin
disk.bin
eeprom.bin
hddinfo.txt
hdkey.bin

Now I'm hoping one of these has what I need. I have read the tutes and have tried putting the eeprom.bin in linux\eeprom dir of the XBoxHDM dir and compiled the CD. After booting off it and selecting the auto unlock option it is still locked. Below is the contents of the HDDinfo.text and I'm hoping you can let me know what to use to unock it.

Disk Serial Number : "WD-WMA8C3826123"
Disk Model Number  : "WDC WD1200JB-00CRA1                     ****PARTINFO****                                XBOX MUSIC      "
