Sd-616t As Backup Drive? Will It Work?
« on: November 17, 2006, 10:05:00 AM »

Ok, im making a xbox for my father for xmas becuase his 2nd wife stole it during there divorce, so I am making him a slim so he has something unique. He needs to play originals, as he cannot ftp to his box, and he has quite a large collection that he'd like to put to the HDD.

So after considering a bunch of ways to keep the dvd drive internal, i found it easier to make and external one. I have all the right adapters and connectors, but before i go out and buy a 616t, i wan't to run this buy you guys and see if it will work.

That says, that you have to hook the 616t up directly, and that a 616t even flashed, still wont read originals if it is connected as a backup drive, (the dvd-swap method). But upon searching the forums, i found a couple posts that said you can attach it in the swap-dvd drive method and it will read originals.

So this is how my xbox is hooked up

So i have done this mod for the power, and i have attached a female molex (i always get confused as to the gender of these things) so i can sitck it otu the back of the case, and when he needs the dvd drive, he can use a cord that i made from two male ends and a ide cable

I also followed this tutorial

Now this works. Without the 2nd tut, when you turn the xbox on (im TSOP with x2 bios) once in UX it says the drive is open, if you use the eject button, or the close dvd option from the menu it hangs at init. With the wires together though, it will say the drive is open, then checking, then unknown. Put a backup/data/audio cd in, then do a IGR and it works, reads it fine.

So now, the real question. Since the wires are connected making the xbox think the original drive is still in, if  i mod the 616t with the motor reverse, and flash it with the 605 firmware, but dont connect the yellow wires for the eject and such (obviously), will it read originals? basically im oging to try it no matter what, but if you guys tell me it should/will work, I would be willing to spend a bit more for a 616.

I know i could just run the dvd-cable out the back and connect that, but the way I plan on doing it will look much better visually.

and on a final note since it's external and the xbox eject button wont be hooked up I know the eject button on the drive wont work and ill have to use the little hole, not a big deal
