That's an odd question. I'd say 46, because there were at least 4 states we acquired unlegitimately.

Ex: Hawaii.

Trick Question: How Many States In The Us
« Reply #4 on: October 16, 2005, 11:05:00 AM »

illegitimately acquired territories aside i am looking at the the federal and local governemnts consider to be a "state" so hawaii, arizone, new mexico and texas DO count as states (and alaska is actually one of the few territories that was legally purchased)

heres my response:

the "states" of

Kentucky
Massachusetts
Pennsylvania
Virginia

are actually commonwealths, meaning there are 46 actual "states"

but the federal government treats these commonwealths as states, so then they should also treat the commonwealths of Puerto Rico and the Northern Marianas Islands as states, bringing the total to 52

This is an interesting fact in the realm of pop trivia, but from a political standpoint it is almost meaningless.

yeah, i understand this, like you say, interesting trivia, probably because when the territories became states they never made any motion in the state government to change their title to "state" since there was no point, the federal government recognized them as such, so theres no point

kinda like old laws that serve no purpose in modern times but were never repealed and just arent enforced anymore

i dont think kentucky isnt a state nor do i think peurto rico is (PR actiually has a pretty sweet deal as it stands, they should stay a commonwealth, but thats a discussion for another day)

The US has quite a few territories that are not states.  A couple have been mentioned already but here they are.

Puerto Rico

Guam

U.S. Virgin Islands

American Samoa

Northern Mariana Islands

Midway Islands

Wake Island

Johnston Atoll

Baker, Howland, and Jarvis Islands

Kingman Reef

Navassa Island

Palmyra Atoll
