You guys are aware that the Patriot act (by another name) was put into place before 9/11 right? So it wasnt implemented in troubled times, it was made law and then made public when the gov't had a good reason for it (or, what they call a good reason at least).

This is just what I heard though, I could be wrong.

Patriot act is a major player in this:

Half of the stuff in there is made possible by the patriot act.  Thank you Mr Bush. And especially atourney general Aschcroft for this beutiful work of art.

Some people deserve to be tortured to an ich of their life, and then allowed to recover, and retortured.  Painful and slow death.

Like in my sig, if being an asshole were a crime these guys would get 3 life- and 6 death- sentences.  If i would rule the world, being an asshole would be a crime. The shit the administration has brought would be shot-on-sight level.

QUOTE(puckSR @ Jul 26 2005, 07:29 AM)
The patriot act is in the continuation of several laws passed during times of war to help "protect" america.  At one point it was law that you couldnt say anything bad about America in public or private.

true,  all it really did is consolidate it into a single legisalative piece.  Most of it was actually created during the cold war.

QUOTE
All ive heard is the liberals complaining about it, and since conservatives are supposed to believe in limiting govt control over our lives, i would think they would disapprove as well.

I dont know a single conservative in person that does approve of it.  Being conservative means less government control both socially and economically.  Neocons have really hurt the republican party.

The founding fathers wanted government to be completely open to public scrutiny, and our personal lives to be completely private from government scrutiny.  Legislation like the patriot act completely reverses their intentions.

QUOTE(puckSR @ Jul 26 2005, 10:56 PM)
I disapprove of it because of the specific powers it grants.

When we wrote our constitution, we had just gotten out of a war.  Many people will point to this to explain things like the 2nd amendment.  The problem is, they are wrong.
We wrote the bill of rights to protect our Government from ever becoming too powerful.

Some people have gotten around that.
QUOTE(puckSR @ Jul 26 2005, 10:56 PM)
We allowed provisions for rebellion and public disapproval, we even allowed people the right to weapons in case they ever needed to rise up and overthrow the government.

biggrin.gif  Im all for that
QUOTE(puckSR @ Jul 26 2005, 10:56 PM)
The basic point is that we made sure that people had the right to be subversive, not just for the short term, but as a permanent state.  The Patriot Act attempts to override this Constitutional right to be subversive, to defend the country.  This is acceptable, providing that an imminent threat exists.  Terrorism, while a threat, is not something you can classify as imminent.  If they attack every couple of years, thats not imminent.  Britain right now, should be oppresive, for a very short period of time.  This is acceptable, however once you are free of immediate and pressing danger, you have to allow people to live again.

Damn another rant, sorry guys

Im not sure about the whole "immence" thing but it does make sense.  I know its krazy but these people are given duffel bags with "$" on them to do this shit.  Thats why i like the second quote.

What I forsee? A cataclysm to trigger rebellion.  I think there will be a 2nd great depression.  Look at the facts:

1. Many things line up as they did before the great depression (companies merging, etc.)
2. Gas prices on the rise
3. Deficit and wars in iraq and afgahnistan make an nice trifecta to suck us's cash
4. No social security money left and that is one of the "nets" which FDRs administration set up to prevent another monetarycollapse.

The last three reasons are all because of pres bush's actions.  Its like he wants one to happen

So you see why i can believe this.  Do you?
