Intel Getting Sued By Amd
« on: June 30, 2005, 02:17:00 PM »

It is interesting of how AMD sues over Intel for charges of monopoly and anticompetive behavior.  I was so surprised about when I read this complaint filed by AMD of its behaviors.  Although this document is long, it is surprising easy to read.  Most of the documents filed to the court has a lot of confusing 'legalese' crap that most people can't understand.  Which is apparant why AMD is going to put full page advertising to major market newspapers to encourge everyone to read this document.

Hopefully AMD can win public support over Intel because it would take about 2 years before they get into court.  AMD only seek $50M in damages which is surprising small.

How does Intel hold a monopoly?  Such bull...

Can't someone be an industry leader while being only just as sleazy as their competitors, not more?

MS has a monopoly, Intel has a following. Theres a difference, its almost impossible for someone to build a computer and say "Ok, now make programs for it". Hell, its hard to find programs for the mac, and Linux. MS has a monopoly. Intel on the other hand, has a following, people use their product religiously. And most PC builders use Intel for whatever reason, its their choice. Assuming this suit wasnt complete BS, AMD should really be suing all the big PC manufacturers like Dell and eMachines for going only with Intel (of course, that claim is BS as well, but you get my point).

It's bull, although Intel did threaten computer companies if they ever started to put AMD processors in their pre-built PC Intel would never support them again. It was some quote in a document that AMD seized from them and it's really going to hurt Intels case. AMD has quite a few of these incidents documented and that kind of action is documented under a monopolistic trait. Anyways the only reason I think it's bs is becasue AMD waited to file this when their profits dropped off, if they would have filed it awhile ago I would have supported them but it's obvious now they are just trying to get money and support any way they can.

This would make for a much stronger case. But it doesnt give AMD reason to say that Intel has a monopoly. Because the computer manufacturers still have a choice of which one they want. They could always put one or the other. Its a monopoly when you cant run a business and the accussed corperation keeps you from running said business. For Intel to say that they wouldnt support the PC builders if they used AMD processors, while a cheap tactic, is still business.

I think AMD does have a valid point.  Years ago when AMD was selling its athlon processors, many pc manufacturs sell AMD based PC's.  Yet today, you see less AMD based pc's sold today by the major manufactors, even though the AMD Opteron is better than intel P4's in terms of performance and power effeciency.

When an average Joe goes to a computer store to buy a PC but doesn't have a choice to whether to buy and AMD pc as opposed to an intel because of the lack of choices.

Take in the example of Standard Oil years ago when that company squashed competition because they can lower oil prices so much where they can crush competition.  Intel's 800 pound guerlla tactics tells OEM's and pc manufacturs that they either buy a certain amount of Intel's processor's to get a discount in terms of a cash rebate.  Some call here call it as business as usual AMD probably can't sell these processors unless they can give them for free...

Yeah, this is most likely just a publicity stunt because the truth is the money isnt that much for what AMD usually does.

AMD is only suing for $50 Mil which is probably not much.  However their ultimate goal to allow PC manufacturs the choice to have AMD pc's without threat of Intel.

Looks like South Korea has joined the investigation toward Intel also...
